Show DISTRICT 3 0 EAST BOUNTIFUL I 1 E R willey prin be i re is i s 1 probably no factor among 0 the public institutions of our land more potent than our public school system no factor upon which the success of our nation so largely depends as upon the public schools seminaries colleges and universities of these four classes of educational institutions the first is by far the most puissant in its effects for the very obvious reason that they are most liberally patronized why should they not be universally ver sally supported when they are found in every quarter of our union union 0 on n the remote plains and in the fastnesses fast nesses of the mountains of the west as in the busy thoroughfare thorough faro and populous cities of the east that the conditions in the rural parts are no not t so happy in many respects as those of the populous cities is true yet if most of young americans who aro are under their tuti lege are receiving lt the training 0 which tho the investigators 0 of this factor intended they should feure we tire on the high z road to national prosperity the wise fathers fat liers among choin garfield was mot most prominent designed that the function of the public school should be to develop in the child unselfish patriotism and to teach M him in to know that free thought free speech free press and unfettered religious sentiment is his herit heritage age he must also learn that it is his imper imperative active duty to respect the heritage of his fellows if the teacher be a true one she is developing 7 his whole nature unfolding in a character and preparing ca hil him to fulfill the purposes of human ex istance to live a complete life the child must have his nature unfolded improved and developed so that ile he gets the highest happiness and is prepared for a perfect discharge of all his duties and obligations arising from the relation with liis his fel fellows thus you see a complete life calls into activity all the powers of the child making him to act to the highest end t and if he is thus developed he is truly educated uc abed it is very obvious that this comprehensive end is not easily met yet this public vital task in the united states is largely elf entrusted trusted to the public school true the kindergarten is fast becoming z introduced among za us but its influence is barely palpable yet I 1 it follows from the above that the public teacher to whom we look for such developments has a most responsible and divine charge entrusted to him since ile he virtually holds within his is or grasp asp the prosperity or r ruin of a nation that is speaking 0 from a public standpoint no one will gainsay the fact that the home circle is not an equally important factor in turning out the character how necessary it is that there should bo be perfect harmony bet between deiv the home and school how necessary that the parents hearts beat responsive with the teachers for the welfare of the child most professions and occupations have a history lii story araug fraught ht with reverses successes changes and improvements bradu gradually evolving in z fro from 1 m the crude and moving 7 t toward oward perfection in this respect the teaching profession is no exception the history of te teaching and pedagogy seems to run parallel with the history lii story of the li human man race taking 1 a retrospect of history we f ind find little to interest us previous to the famous greek pedagogues cog gues acs except in china where kon kong c or the great chinee philosophers or the teacher as they called him taught his bis race years B C that the destiny of manawas man was to perfect himself the chinese seem to have developed none in tho the principles since his time but rather prefer to think his teachings perfect and indeed they have much of merit in them he gave the moral thought after ward couched in the laug language aage of our golden rule the greeks next in antiquity are represented by pythagoras and of school of boys at sparta lie he was succeeded by solon the famous greek lawgiver ind and his school at athens w where here he aimed at the harmonious hormon ious lous development of all the powers of man without doubt three of the mot moat gi teachers of greece were socrates so crates plato and aristotle whose names have become synoni cyms of education these three men differed much mach in their philosophy and theories of teaching all allot of them advocated ideas far ir in advance of their age awl soule some of the them in up to this day remain unsolved in depth and foresight 0 every teacher knows of this trio irio socrates was first and loft left as oue one of his fore foremost pupils plato who in turn developed develop deve lopel eI aristotle these three men differed however in their theories the greek adeil of education way may be summarized in the he expression the true the beautiful and the good of tile the roman auroa Pompi liua holds a mythical inyl icil place siu similar most imitated imi emulated and most sought after of all teachers lie ile is tile the embodiment of a true teacher I 1 it might be observed while speaking in of this subject that there is a local movement which has for its purpose p ose the cuttino cutting of 0 the teachers salaries this is 9 ft movement to be depreciated precia ted for the reason that it il means cheap teachers and poor work it if the teacher has su au lucli to do with those qualities of man which lead him to ft A successful career or a dig disgraceful graceful failure it is paramount itil importance that he be led by a ful fill teacher it will not startle you to say that the teacher like the artisan is working for the highest sala ry that can be honorably obtained it is evident that it other countries and district
