MODEST AND CONSCIENTIOUS d We had occasion to remark the other day that the policv of the Republican party as exhibited in this country means federal control of elections with a bayonet behind be-hind every ballot so that the party in 1 power may be enabled to do its own reg istration counting and certification The quoted phrases are the words of Republican Republi-can leaders not our own and in evident ignorance of that fact the Tribune bubbles over like this One would think that in a land of as much i intelligence in-telligence as this the most bitter partisan ttd the most unscrupulous man would hesitate before putting out such stuff for intelligent people peo-ple to read But the joke doesnt end there a little further along the same modest and tearful paper says As to controlling elections by federal power and having a bayonet behind every voter the truth is that the only citizens In this country who have over been refused when they wanted to cast a ballot have Republicans tho only violence ever perpetrated upon voters has been upon Republicans It seems odd that this conscientious editor didnotremember profession of modesty long enough to forbear writing the above ludicrous statement before closing that very article
