Show Captain Verney Held for Trial LONDON April 30There was a sensation sensa-tion today at the postponed examination of Captain Verney member of parliament charged with instigating the procuration of the governess Miss Brackett for immoral purposes caused by the testimony of a woman named Louise Adeline keeper of a hotel ia Paris that Captain Verney had called upon her seven or eight different times and asked her to procure for him two or three girls promising her 100 francs if she succeeded Witness added in spite of < the captains solicitations and the inducements induce-ments which he held forth she positively refused to undertake the procuration referred re-ferred to Captain Verney was finally held for trial and his bail increasedfrom 510000 to 25000 At the trial of Captain Verney many letters let-ters signed Wilson a name which Cap lain Verney is charged with assuming were identified as being in Captain Ver neys handwriting The hal porter testi fed to the fact that letters addressed Wil son were duly forwarded to Captain Ver ney Todays evidence had a weakening effect on the captains assurances Mme Adaline was positive in her identification fication of Verney When asked by the magistrate if Captain Verney said what he wanted the girls for Adaline replied promptly IHe said he wanted to seduce them and they must be virtuous This created a great sensation Verney when asked if he had anything t say in his own behalf said ho would say nothing in this court |
