concerning the record of Dick Edwards the Texas murderer while anything but flattering to him is not particularly encouraging to George Painter whose obituary will be written January 12 unless his at torn ys can convince the governor that there is good ground for believ ing Edwards is the gound who killed Alice Painter The woman was choked to death May 17 1891 There appears to be little doubt that on this date Edwards was in Salt Lake city I i When William Condon an attorney I j in the Northern building saw a picture of Edwards in The Herald of yesterday i yester-day he at once recognized it as that of a man he had known in the west Until two or three months ago Mr Condon was practicing law in Salt Lake city and it was there he first met the man through whom Painter hopes to be saved from the gallows In the spring of 1890 said Mr Condon yesterday while I was in Salt Lake city I received from a Dr Peasley of Telluride Colorado a bill against Dick Edwards for collection Edwards being at that time in the same tqwn with me He was a hack driver then and my efforts to collect the bill proved fruitless However I did not forget him On the morning of Jqne 7 1S91 a well known western gambler named Ed Callahan started with a horse and i buggy for a roadhouse near the city in company with Josie Hill a woman i I of the town When near the house a man jumped out from the side of the i roadway and shot Callahan who died tin j the womans1 arms She was arrested ar-rested on her return to town and i was Cal Bean from whom the rig had been hired I defended Bean and he was acquitted The woman was held to the grand jury but i failed to indict her Several weeks later the police secured r evidence on the strength of which they rearrested Bean and Josie Hill and with them Dick Edwards who wak known was as Coyote Dick and Lottie Miner Lottie woe the keeper of the house where the Hill woman livedwhile Edwards was bartender in a sajopn across the street from Lotties place He was also working there theday of the murder The second examination resulted in favor of the defendants All four were discharged There was really no evidence against Jhem andTto this day the slayer of Gambler Callahan unknown un-known r I talked with Edwards the night of June 7 1S91 and while I could not swear he was in Salt Lake city the 17th of the preceding month it is my Impression he had been tending bar near Lottie Miners house for several weeks at the titne of the Callahan homicide Edwards was look Calahan upon as a desperate character Dr Peasley told me at the time I was trying to collect the bill that Edwards had been ride suspected of killing a man near Tellu James Donaldson Who is well known on Clark street knew Dick Edwards in Salt Lake city in 1891 Donaldson was a special poUceman at the time and worked for the sfntA on thfv nniin han shooting affair r I knew Edwards very well indeed said Donaldson yesterday yes-terday He used to hang about the hackmen In Salt Xake city and was considered a tough man but I do not care to say anything about his charac ter particularly as he is in a bad scrape now The last time I saw him was in March 1S9L He told me he was going east for some time but as he usually used to travel between Chicago and Salt Lake city I did not think anything about i I did not see him again until the middle of June He said that he had just come from Chicago and that he had not had good luck there This will be read with Interest here not alone because of the statements concerning Edwards but also because of the references to Billy Condon who has been gon from our gaze for some time and Jim Donaldson the 18karat sport and prize ring referee who until recently made Salt Lake his headquar ters i tersThe i The InterOcean of Saturday con tains thi statement of the comparison If the pictures from which the Inter Oceans reproductions are made do both subjects justice Edwards and Painter are not like two peas in a pod podPhysically Physically they are as unlike as two men can possibly be though in moral makeup they are two of n kind as both have been vicious panders and ts the brutal beneficiaries of character lass women But it is not alone pictures upon which it will be remembered is now under life sentence at Sherman Texas for the murder of Mrs Dr Haynes at Dennison Texas May 17 1S92 just one year to the day after Alice Martin was killed The same night Mrs Haynes was killed two other women were murdered in Den ison and a fourth one wounded the marks on all showing that each had been shot by a 44caliber ball Edwards Ed-wards was arrested in December 1592 in Superior City Wis and taken to Texas where he was tried with the result as stated a life sentence for the murder of Mrs Haynes I Somehow Edwards propensity for killing women becoming known and the hint being whispered that ne was in Chicago about the time Alice Martin Mar-tin was murdered the effort has been strenuously made to affix Alice Martins Mar-tins death upon him along with his Texas achievements in the murderous te line lineUpon a showing of Edwards possible possi-ble connection with Alice Martins death Painter sentenced to swing December De-cember 15 1893 was given a respite to January 12 1891 I is the intention of Painters attorney soon after New Years day fortified by Dick Roches affidavit and others by appeal to Governor Gov-ernor Altgeld for farther respite for Painter to the end as it is contended of fully identifying Edwards as one of Alice Martins paramours and as her murderer v i Monday Mrs Roth and Mrs Slat tery two women claiming to have seen Alice Martin talking at her doorway the night of her murder with 3 man not Painter are going to Sherman Texas to see if they can identity Edwards visitor wards as Alice Martins midnight itor |
