Show THE PARTY BEFORE MEN Devotion to Democratic principles does not necessarily involve admiration admira-tion or endorsement of any man whom the Democracy has placed in a high public position There will be many voters who will help to ulectthe Democratic Demo-cratic candidate next month who do not agree with Clevelands policy in several particulars There are Republicans Republi-cans who ridicule and some who curse Benjamin Harrison The party is greater than the mane man-e Herald has supported the Presi dent in the course which has appeared to it consistent with the platform of the party and the interests of the public but has not agreed with him on his views as to silver At the same time it has defended him against the untruths un-truths and groundless assaults of papers that hate him and has opposed patent facts to their gauzy fictions The election of a Democrat in this city to the legislature has no more to do with any approval of President Cleveland than the election of a Republican Re-publican would wIth the endorsement of the goldbugs of their party The Democrats of Salt Lake and a number num-ber who are not Democrats who will vote for W C Hall In doing so will not think of Cleveland or his policy > but of the candidate who is worthy of their choice Men may come and men may go but the party of the Constitution and the country abides for ever Its principles prin-ciples are the guide of its members and they are nQt tied to any person or official offi-cial They make Presidents and therefore there-fore do not necessarily endorse them because they continue to vote for their party But nevertheless Cleveland is superior to his detractors and the country will do him justice when time has demonstrated the wisdom of his general course |
