Show CHRISTMAS AT THE CAPITOL I I The President lh Wife and Babies 1 Have R Happy Elme Washington Dec 25 Chrfstraas day opened bright and sunny Tbe temperature tem-perature was unusually mild I w han h-an ideal day to be out of doors The street and parks were filled oor with people peo-ple Early in the looming express wagons wag-ons began arriving at the White Ious to add to the great stock of presents which had previously arrived On huge dry goods box from New York labeled for Ruth Handle with Care < tojd of its delicate contents The bundles and boxes were taken to the large front room on the second story where white aproned nurses superintended the unpacking un-packing The president and family en famiy joyed a genuine home Christmas The stockings of the little ones had been hung up and were filled to overflow ing this ovefow morning with presents great and small some of them rare gret and rar costly They osty came from every part of the country not only ever personal friends but people in remote localities were among the givers Of course President and Mrs Cleveland came in for their full share of tul presents pres-ents but the president did not wish his individual gifts mentioned as he regarded them as personal and family famiy affairs At 10 the president went to his desk for an hour to attend to such matters 00 icquireu immediate attention The House was closed except to specially speialy invited friends As the Presbyterian churches did not have Christmas services none of the While house family went to church President and Mrs Cleveland took advantage ad-vantage of the bright weather about noon and drove about the city This afternoon little Margarett BIssel iaugnter of the postmastergeneral had a Christmas t e at which Mrs Cleveland with Ruth and Esther Mrs Carlisle and the youthful members of her family Mrs Thurber and various cabinet women and children were present pres-ent All attaches of the executive mansion were remembered by thepres ident most ot them receiving turkeys and those of the longest services get ting articles of more permanent use I Secretary and Mrs Gresham had a Christmas dinner at the Arlington Secretary and Mrs Lamont had a Christmas tree for the little ones Secretary Sec-retary Morton and daughter entertained distance entertain-ed a number of family guests from a |
