Show THE FOOTBALL JAMB A HOT CONTESTFROM START TO PINISU The Absence of Iass and Wedge PlajH a IMeasHHt Fcatnre The Christians the Victors t toe Y M C Aund High School 1 teams played their game yesterday as advertised despite the fact that the i Exposition grounds were covered with several inches ot snow and mud The contest was close and exciting but the i High School Was outplayed and outgeneraled i out-generaled by the Y M C A team i The game was characterized by the absence of mass and wedge play and the frequent use of kicking in which Peabody had decidedly the advantage I The Young Men won the toss and took the ball Their opening play was i the pretended formation of a flying i wedge but instead of following this I out eabody liked l the ball forty yards down into High School territory lOdell returned the kick which was j caught by Cross and Peabody again I kicked for a large gain After several exchanges the Y M C A got the ball I and sent JBradish around the left end I for ten yards Rasmussen went i I through the center and Peabody took the ball through tackle for a touch idown With his usual accuracy he kicked the goal which made the score six points for the Y M C A These were the only points made by either side sideThe The second thirty minutes of the game were spent in hard work by the High School but their efforts did not avail for as soon as the Y M C A goal was In danger the ball was given to full back Peabody who never failed to avert the peril During this half Allen of the High School made the longest run of the game A number of the players of the High School were broken up before they were slanted by the breaking through ot Falconer and Guan The tackling for the High Schoolwas done by Glen dinning Odell and McIntyre for the city team by Bradish Peabody and Mansfield There was no > slugging whatever and with the exception pf one man being slightly hurt no one was the worse for the game The attendance Tvas good and the Y M C A will derive quite an amount from the benefit Downey refereed the game and gave universal satisfaction Bradfleld of the post made a good umpire Notes Peabody was omnipresent and more than once prevented the High School from scoring The Y M C A mascot drove the nigger into the wood pile McIntyre Glendinning and Reading of the city team assisted the H S boys but could not ward off defeat Rasmussen hits the line hard Colton and Beecher were often down on the balL McGraw the High School quarterback quarter-back had a hard time being beset on all sides After the game Shipler photographed the Y SL C A team Including mascot mas-cot Ayer and Abel were very strong as opponents in the line and each made one elegant tackle Odell captained the High School team while Cross acted in the same capacity for the Y II C A The winners were challenged by the lightweight team of the post i I Social Evening Club I trhl Social Evening club gave a I dancing party in Younger ha11 last i evtening which was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by those present A Matinee There was a large attendance at the matinee at Youngers yesterday and a smaller one at Christensens It the Tbcjitrp Popular prices and the holiday spirit spir-it jammed the theatre last night from ground floor to fly roost the occasion occa-sion being the reappearance of the Salt Lajce Stock company The play Shadows of a Great City is very good and the players rather improved on their last performance Mr Col lins does some things remarkably well but is not always natural even from a stage standpoint In pathetic scenes Mr Oscar Don M Sedley Mr Young and Mr Taylor and the Misses Lavine and Drury all performed their parts quite creditably and one of the ladies broke all stage records by saying eether The plot is quite interesting interest-ing and well connected with the usual usu-al quantity of love making and rather more than the customary assortment of villains who of course are overtaken by Nemesis and violently brought to naught In the last act to the Intense satisfaction of the galleries A new and exciting feature invented by the management was the raffle of a clock among the seat holders the numbers being drawn In full view of the audience au-dience by 3 blindfolded small girl Mary Davis a 14yearold miss occupying occu-pying No 106 first circle captured the timepiece The play will be repeated tonight and Wednesday night Charity ball Thursday Thurs-day night |
