Show THE CAUSE AND THE XltTECTS a The alarmists who have done much to bring about the depression in trade which afflicts the country t continue to place the blame fer it all upon thE present administration admin-istration and tho change wrought by the election of last November As we have repeatedly shown We are reaping tho fruits of Republican sowngand the disasters dis-asters that have come upon the land are the culmination of evils arising from Republican Re-publican legislation and policy which there has not yet been opportunity to reform re-form but which will be reformed in due time As to tha dread which is still said to be the cause prostration in many branches of business our protectionist friends ought to try to be a little more consistent It is the people of this country who decided de-cided that they would have a change They expressed that decision at the polls in the election at a Democratic House of Representatives and again by making both the legislature and executive branches of the government Democratic They decided on a policy of tariff ref rm and the retirement of the Republican party and its high protection was the peoples work Now these Republicans want it to be understood that it is tho fear of tariff reform re-form which the peoplw have determined upon which frightens these same people and ruins trade The peopla want reform re-form but are so afraid of it that they stop buying and selling and manufacturing in dread of what they have twice emphatically emphati-cally declared they would have This nonsense ought to be seen in its true light by everybody It is an absurdity on its false face It is an attempt to shift from the party of extravagance high protection for a class and unsound finance the responsibility for the troubles which their conduct of public affairs has brought upon the country The cause of these evils has been at work for years the effects are now being felt As soon as possible the cause will be removed and the evil effects will follow But to taunt the reforming party with the results of the work of their predecessors is the height of impudence the essence of inconsistency in-consistency the characteristic of radical Republicanism |
