Show PERSONAL LIBERTY Senator Hills Address Before tfya Now York Hop Growers Association UTICA f N YJnly 29Senator Hill delivered an address today before the Hop Growers association on Personal Liberty Lib-erty Ho said that in the realm of labor and domain of industry r the principle princi-ple involved in personal liberty cannot be I too frequently asserted The fact cannot be too strongly emphasized that every mans labor is his own and he can do I with it as he pleases He has a personal right to name his own wages I his own hours and all other terms under which he is willing to employed nnd if they are satisfactory I satisfac-tory to the one who hires an aereement is reached and there is an end to the can I > t i l 1 I t troversy between them The contract is a personal matter with which nb other workmen or employer has a right to interfere in-terfere These considerations do not conflict con-flict with the obligations which workmen assume when they voluntarily join labor organizations They always must be deemed to reserve the abstract right of repudiating such membership whenever they so prefer In my opinion the citadel of personal liberty in this country is more in danger of being undermined by ill considered opinions of some of its judges straining doubtful points and involving quibbles in favor of corpQrate power and creating factions to cripple the efforts of honest labor struggling against great odds to assert as-sert its dignity than from all the arbi trary demonstrations ever made by workingmen work-ingmen Speaking of the tendencies of tho times Mr Hill uaid Mercantile exchanges in our great cities are clamoring clamor-ing for relief from laws which restrict their business in accordance with old fashioned plans and notions The whole country is at last awakening to the impropriety im-propriety of making our money metals a matter of merchandise by the govern ment itself and hoping a patriotic Congress Con-gress soon to convene will faithfully respond re-spond with promptitude to thedemands of public sentiment in that regard |
