Show WHEEL DAY AT SALTAffi Graceful Ladles Show Their Skill on Bicycles Valuable Prizes Hotly Competed for The Gentlemen 3Iao Fast Time and Show I Great Dexterity General Notes The weather last evening was not calculated cal-culated to bring joy to the hearts of the wheelmen and it certainly cut down the attendance at the tournament at Saltair The cyclists were enthusiastic though as cyclists are and the competition was a hot one At 6 oclock forty wheelmen fell in line and Captains Hall ana Angell headed a beautiful parade The intricate evolutions were heartily applauded and this feature of the exhibition was particularly partic-ularly pleasing The officials of the races were Captains Hall and Angell judges Harry E Browne starter and M R Evans referee The first event was the mile heat for safeties for which there were five entries Weiller took the first heat with Jensen a close second Time 320 Second Heat Angell first Freeborn second Time332 Final heat between four winners Freeborn Free-born first Jensen second Weiller third Time318 PrizesFirst gold medal second electric lamp third ordinary lamp Boys Race three entries Will Evans age 1 years first prize Al Angell age 13 years second prize Time 232 Prizes a sweater and bicycle shoes Master Will Evans surpassed the expectations expec-tations of his many friends and was greeted with an ovation The race proved the most exciting of the evening and the efforts of the youths were loudly applauded THE MILE RACE In the mile heat race excitement was at its height Everything went smoothly until the third lap when in rounding the circle Angel fell but quickly mounted his wheel only to fall again in the fifth lap As he was the favorite it certainly was the cause of Utahs champion losing the race In the eighth lap Jensen and Weiller collided and measured their lengths upon the floor Jensen recovering recover-ing first did not fail to make Up for lost time and came in an easy second On account of the numerous slides of the I boys the precaution was taken of wet ting the tires EXHIBITION DRILL The fancy drill corps of sixteen members mem-bers under Captain Hall eight ladies and eight gentlemen next gave an exhibition exhi-bition drill and the various maneuvers evinced a grace and perfection reflecting creditably upon their drill master TRICK HIDING In the trick riding which followed TO Angell had no competitor upon the ordinary ordi-nary wheeland was accordingly given the prize a silver medal but the safety was not so graced four competitors haying hay-ing entered viz Arthur Liday Oscar Groeshell jr Harry Emise and James Gunn The tricks performed were wonderful I won-derful and the embodiment of grace vieing with any professional riding ever seen in this city Master Liday being both agile and clever in his performances and Harry Emise in his imitation of the bucking broncho broughtdown the house Mr James Gunns performance was very clever His seesaw and descending the steps on a safety both very dangerous danger-ous feats were rewarded with abundance of applause His exhibition with Master Groeshell was also good but availed him nothing in the eyes of the judges a doubles were not considered The prizewinners prize-winners were Harry Emise first prize silver medal j James Gunn second prize electric lamp Oscar Groeshell third prize common lamp GRACEFUL LADIES The following prizes were awarded to the most graceful lady riders present First Miss Mattie Moffatt gold medal second Mrs Stein silver medal third Miss Lucinda Evans bicycle suit A great deal of dissatisfaction regarding regard-ing this decision was evinced but the judges certainly ought to be commended for upon their disagreeing they called in four additional judges to decide Mrs Herbert Pembroke was conspicuous for the graceful manner in which she rode the wheel and was certainly worthy of a prize but everyone cannot receive a prize and the position of judge in ladies cases is by no means an enviable one |
