Show BULLDOZING AND TILE SILVER VOTE The Ogden Standard referring ito the Salt Lake HERALDS incredulity as to any bulldozing on the part of the President Presi-dent to secure the repeal of the purchasing purchas-ing clause of the SHERMAN law wants THE HERALD to explain why a number of members of Congress have taken the position they occupy in relation to silver It says THE HERALD probably knows but dont care to toll THE HERALD has had no explanation from the gentlemen referred to as to their reasons for voting for repeal but it has an opinion on I the subject which it thinks is I as good as the guess made or rather adopted by the Standard We do care to tell what we think It is this We believe be-lieve from the arguments offered by the supporters of repeal that they are hone3tly of the opinion that the purchasing clause should co and that legislation to settle the silver question should come afterwards We do not agree with their view as we have stated several times but we see no sense or justice in jumping to the conclusion that because they hold a different opinion to ours they are bought with moneyor patronage or are influenced by any unworthy mo tives Neither do we believe that the Republican Republi-can papers which echo the unsupported suspicion of partisan correspondents who of courseare unpurchasable and altogether al-together accuratereally place credence in that suspicion It suits theirpurpose it pleases a certain class of readers it gratifies a desire to prominentDem ocrats and so they harp upon it with great delight But it is neither wise nor decent for it provokes comparisons and disgusts fairminded people If Democrats must have been bought who voted for unconditional repeal who and what bought the Republicans Republi-cans who in an immensely greater proportion also voted for repeal and against Iree coinage And we remind our interrogating contemporary that it is not for THE HERALD to explain why cer ain gentlemen favor unconditional repeal re-peal but lor the papers which charge corruption against those gentlemen to give us the proofs of their perfidy Up to date not a solitary scrap of evidence evi-dence has been adduced to justify the vile and cowardly personal attacks on the motives of the men who agree with the President and who however mistaken have as much right to their views as have the creatures that assail them and who when the heat of debate is passed will retain much more of the respect of the public |
