Show lR LAVREN RETURNS His Views on the Outlook for Silver THE ST LOUIS CONVENTION Letter Ecceired at the Chamber of Commerce A German Visitor Who Is Investigating Irrigation The Crop Report Meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to BeHold cormerco Hold This Ei oning Notes Henry W Lawrence returned yesterday from his trip to Washington New York Chicago and other eastern cities duly impressed by all he hasseen and holding some very strong ideas on the silver question ques-tion When seen last night at his residence he gave some of those ideas to THE HERALD man i What news do you bring from Washington Wash-ington queried the scribe Very bad news for those who have the silver cause at heart You know the ad ministration has been using al its influence in-fluence to brine about a repeal and has been seconded in its efforts by the powerful power-ful eastern press and the potent influence of the creditor class Under such circumstances circum-stances it would hardly be reasonable to suppose that the silver men can muster enough strength to win success The administration ad-ministration influence is quite strong as there are few Congressmen who would dare forego the chance of obtaining the patronage which so materially adds to their strength There are some men in the national legislature who would find their whole political career at an end i they should be shut out in the distribution distribu-tion of spoils Therefore it cannot be wondered that many of the not overly strong are being brought into line for repeal re-peal and that both houses of Congress will be absolutely dominated by the anti silverites FUTURE ACTION REGARDING SILVER What will come after the repeal The fact that many members oi both the Senate and House who are free coinage men will vote for unconditional repeal is an evidence that some favorable favora-ble action is looked tor after the Sherman law shall have been disposed of Both Cleveland and Carlisle are reported on good authority to be in favor of the coinage of the white metal i some reasonable reas-onable and sure ratio can be agreed upon by the nations There seems to be a strong sentiment in favor of a reconvention reconven-tion of the International Bimetallic con I gress in October or somewhat later Of course such action must prove beneficial to silver England it is true would not consent to any movement looking toward the rehabilitation of the white metal while she is under her present pres-ent government But it is well known that the leaders of the conservatives are bimetallists and will give silver justice should they obtain the power The situation situ-ation in England is such however that no prediction can bemade as to the course of events in that oguntry Some hold that while the homerule bill will pass the Commons yet it will be killed outright by the Lords Further action on it cane can-e taken only by an appeal to the country which may resuljjj a change of ministry There are some who sanguinely predict smooth sailing for the Gladstonian ministry The question of silver in India and China is one that can hardly be solved without a widespread panic which must result in great harm to the commercial com-mercial and manufacturing interests of Great Britain and in stagnation in the colonies Then too Mr Eawlms simile as to the small gold blanket with which men are trying to cover the large financial bed was quite appropriate It is true that when gold to needed in any part of the world the otherfparls feel a depression depres-sion These are all good signs A SILVER PARTY ASILvR Will It result lathe dissolution of the old parties if silver should be repudiated repudi-ated atedThereseerns i There seems to be a general undercurrent under-current of feeling in the southern western west-ern and middle states that i nothing will ho done for silver hv the old TMirtifis a new party must be formed which will J give justice The Populists are making strenuous efforts topull all the elements together and form them into a mass that will carry that party into power To this end many of the extreme features of their pjatform will probably be shaved off and the silver issue be made to predominate The party controls no newspapers in the metropolitan cities but it has the surprising number of 2000 country journals scattered about through the middle southern and western states 200 of them being in Kansas These are endeavoring to bring about a Populist victory on silver lines and are doing a great deal of work In the event of the final defeat of the silverites in Congress the Populists will call upon all silver men to train under its banner and will probably prob-ably succeed in drawing a great deal of strength In this connection a story is told on Congressman Bailey the bright young man from Texas This gentleman in a speech before election promised that the Democratic party would do justice to silver i given another trial and promised in the hearing of Senator Peffer that i the party did not he would join the Populists Pop-ulists Peffer met him a short time ago and said I suppose youll be one of us before long and received the reply that Im doing good deal of thinking about THE LABORING MENThe 1 MEN-The laborers recognize the necessity of having free silver and we are assured by Mr Powderly that the great majority of them will vote for the party which will advocate its coinage This is a question ques-tion of bread and butter to the men fact and they are likely to realize that factTaken Taken all in all the present seems discouraging while the future much whie promises STATEHOOD FOR UTAH sion Will a statehood bill pass at this ses sionNot Not unless the silver question is settled set-tled The antisilverites have no desire to stock the Senate with any more men who are likely to prove antagonistic to their designs But i the silver question is thoroughlydispoaed of there is a likelihood like-lihood of a statehood bill being engineered through both houses and being signed by the president 1 THE CITIZENS TICKET ment Will you support this citizens move mentI I have not been back long enough to investigate the subject but I am liberal enough in my views to support any movement move-ment which will put the city governmpnt npon a business basis 1 know we arc spending a great deal of money and that more could be done i business busi-ness men were doing the spend ing I the citizens movement should bring to the front a business ticket it would probably receive my support Business men are what we want at the head of the city government and we muse have them |
