| Show CANDIDATES GALORE A Lively Race for the Chamber of Commerce Secretaryship I A Benton Is a Promising Dark Horse Judge Collmrii rank Gillespie Causten Browne and Others There are a half dozen men who aspire to the office of secretary of the Chamber of Commerce to succeed Septimus W Sears whose resignation is to take place tomorrow Among the names which will be presented pre-sented to the board at a meeting called to convene this afternoon will be Frank Gil lespie who camo to the city shortly after the Wichita boom and was elected secretary secre-tary of the chamber to succeed the late Col O J HolJister His selection it was believed at that time would boom the city to a hundred thousand in a year or so Mr Gillespie worked faithfully and was an enthusiastic supporter of printers ink and if he did not boom the shingles off vacant lots it was because it was not a theory but a condition that confronted us He held the office to the satisfaction of the board until he found that he and Fred Simon then president could not suck lemonade through the same quill without feeling something like lockjaw coming on The relations of the president nnd his secretary secre-tary became so strained that Mr Gillespie resigned ana since that time he has been devoting his time to mining deals and other investment schemes With silver at 60 Mr Gillespie would not object to the position of secretary of the chamber of commerce at 1800 a year The chamber being a nonpolitical nonreligious organization it affords an asylum for the meritorious young men of all political parties and those who have earned the honors of preferment without attaining them in the service can have their names considered by the discriminating discrimi-nating board Causten Browne who wielded the pen with powerful effect during dur-ing the regime of 0 B Allen in the county clerks office would not object if the directors were favorably disposed to his candidacy C A Short has had his merits mentioned men-tioned to a number of the directors and if in the shaking of the secretary tree the pippins happen to bob on his side of the palings C A will not be too short to put the golden fruit in his pocket and politely says thanks Ent all the candidates mentioned experience ex-perience an uncomfortable shiver when the name of Judge E F Colborn is mentioned men-tioned The judge is the favorite of a number of the board who want at this late day to show their appreciation of his services when he toured the continent in behalf of Utah cereals on the exposition car There is however a dark horse in training by his friends who may win the race against so promising a field On the quiet a number of the directors have spoken Marshal Irving A Benton in regard to taking the office just to help the town along The salary in his case would be no consideration whatever what-ever Mr Benton is a man of destiny and it would fit into his term as marshal so snugly The resignation of Sears was made to take place July 1 and the installation instal-lation of Nat Brigham was nominated to occur for the same day as if the gods had directed that Mr Benton should fall from the marshalship direct into the chamber of commerce without being docked a single day Benton his friends argue would make a rattling secretary The directors will meet this afternoon and as they are made up of such men as Irving Benton M J Gray H P G Coates William H Howe J S Cameron James H Bacon Nicholas Treweek Spencer Clawson L P Kelsey P W Sladsen and A H Cannon with W E Hubbard president of the board they can be relied upon to select the right man for the place t |
