Show I voiv York Democratic ConvAiiHnn SARATOGA Sept I5The Democratic tA1AOGA tept Democ state convention was called to order at noon George Raines of Rochester was chosen temporary chairman and began his address He said The campaign which draws upon us is to be fought upon the records of the parties l the state administration adminis-tration I will assure the confidence of the people in their actual leadership We are no longer left to conjecture as to the Republican leadership Pattison stalks in midday for popular view and judgment The most conspicuous plank in the Republican Repub-lican platform is a precise acknowledgement acknowledge-ment of reciprocity iu trade with foreign people as advantageous to our industries The temporary cnalrman said they pointed with pride to the growing commerce of the country and reciprocity with our American I neighbors induced by the matchless foresight fore-sight of Secretary Blaine The foresight so commended dates from February 18 1800 and was very hateful to the Republican can Congress I came too late to stop the movement of the people in every state to retire that Republican Congress Con-gress The foresight of the people had been exercised at a much earlier period and had been kept active by a wilful refusal of Congress to give such a reduction to the tariff as would make it competitive not prohib itory I is along the lines of state affairs that this contest must wage most keenly The people are weary of a dictator of legislation legis-lation not charged by the people with office They realize that Platts whim has been the breath in the nostrils of Senator Fassett during his whole career Fas setts leadership has been forced upon his associates by every appliance of machine politics He held by the throat the largest interests of state until they gave up a bribe of place or subservience to the ambition i ambi-tion of Platt The speaker dwelt at length I upon state matters Speaking of the last census the speaker said that the state by it was robbed of its equal right to the ballot box He scored the Republican legislature for its failures to do various things for the good of the state and people In closing he eulogized Hill and hoped tho mantle of succession in the high office of the governor would fall upon as brave and skillful a leader and as true a Democrat as the GovernorSenator When Raines referred to Governor Hill he I was enthusiastically cheered After roll call a short recess was taken After recess Vorhees protested on behalf of the New York Democracyagainst Tammany Tam-many delegations in every assembly district dis-trict in New York Jackson presented the protest of the County Democracy The usual committees were and the convention took appointed conventon a recess until tomorrow morning All the afternoon and evening conferences confer-ences were in progress efforts being made to reconcile thQ County Democrats and secure se-cure them a representation less than that which has heretofore been accorded them but the Counties declare they will accept nothing less tham what belongs to them Tonight it was rumored some other candidate can-didate will be placed on the state ticket for 1 governor than Flower and one Tammany delegate says it looks as i there is a possibility possi-bility of the nomination going to Hill as something must be done to unify tho discordant dis-cordant elements The platform committee has adopted a report reaffirming the natianal platform denouncing the Sherman silver law as being be-ing no solution of tho gold and silver question ques-tion and condemning the excesses of the last Congress 1 In spite of rumors late tonight it is thought Flower will get the gubernatorial nomination with Sheehan in tho second place The committee on contested seats decided in most cases to give the contestants hal representation but Tammany was given full representation in Ne v York city |
