Show W W Astor Will Become an Englishman Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dlspatchf NEW YOlK Sept 15It is said by peo plo in Now York credited with being in the I confidence of William Waldorf Astor that the millionaire has finally and irrevocably reached the determination of establishing his residence permanently in England Ho will never return to this country it is added except on a visit and precisely as an Englishman would Vague rumors to thie general effect have been circuiate during the past year but no confirmation of their truth could be obtained The present pres-ent announcement seems to have every warrant of authority The information comes mcE or less directly from Mr Astor himself and from letters written by Mrs Astor to friends in this country The mere rumor that Mr Astor had taken up his residence abroad created some uneasiness among various charitable associations asso-ciations in New York which depend for their working capital on voluntary contri butiohs In many cases simply to test the matter societies have addressed circulars to Mr Astor in London although no previous pre-vious subscription bad ever been previously previ-ously received from him The two societies socie-ties in New York to which William Wal dorf Astor and his branch of the family have been most liberal are the childrens nnd organizataion The charity peo 1 who are in possession of > 1 the facts naturally decline to talk but the genera impression seoms to be that the societies mentioned will not benefit so greatly from Mr Astorr wealth tnis year as they did last year Tho Astor library and its operations are of course supposed to bo an object of special and peculiar interest terest to the Astor family The strangest feature of the entire story is that Mr Astor it is claimed has given the most undoubted doubted evidence of indifference as to the future of the library I is pointed out in the first place that although the library a it stands now is the most complete library in the country and with his additional assistance would be enabled t approach a place alongside the libraries of the old world Mr Astor ignores ig-nores its very existence and goes abroad after having made tno statement to a number num-ber > friends that one of his chief reasons for doing so is that he has literary work to prosecute and wishes practically to live at the library of the British museum |
