Salisbury Wants a Confederation OTTAWA Ont March 26It is Sin S-in reliable quarters that as a partial solution solu-tion of the New Foundland question Lord Salisbury is using every effort to bring about a confederation of that colony with the dominion A member of the cabinet said tonight he believed Newfoundland would be a great acquisition to the domin 5 ion and the government would gladly welcome wel-come any reasonable proposition by which a union might be attained The main obstacle ob-stacle in the way of a federation would bo the determined opposition that many lead tog merchants of Newfoundland would offer as it would destroy the monop oly that they now enjoy in trade Speaking of the proposed commercial treaty recently negotiated between the United States and Newfoundland he said nothing more disastrous coule befall the commercial commer-cial welfare of the dominion than ratifica a tion of such a treaty independent of Canada Can-ada I was for this reason Sir John inter fered aud used his influence with Lord Newfoundlanders Salisbury in defeating the scheme of the I 1 I
