Show FIRE AND POLICE BOARD Another Meeting Held Last Jisht Behind Be-hind Closed Doors Who controls the police department of Salt Lake city is just now the burning question which is being thoroughly investigated by the board of police and fire commissioners The members of the board are of the opinion that the act of the Legislature creating that body gives them the complete com-plete and exclusive control of the department de-partment and it is very probable that they will assert their right today Just why the mayor and chief should take it upon themselves to order the department to Ogden is what the commissioners com-missioners will undertake to ascertain before the meeting called for this afternoon after-noon at 3 oclock The third meeting of the commissioa held last night was a caucus as were the other two and nothing was accomplished accom-plished The members of the commission commis-sion are unable to come together on the selection of a clerk and the regular business on the table cannot be considered con-sidered until the board is fully organized organ-ized and the members have drawn for the long and short terms according to the provisions of the territorial statute stat-ute Not having been consulted regarding Sundays movements of the police department de-partment and the subsequent absence of the from the city of the majority e force the members of the board naturally set on foot an investigation as to the orders which were issued and by whom The proceedings were behind closed doors but enough was gathered by the representatives of the press to show that there would more than likely be music in the air and that too in very short order City Attorney Hoge and Assistant Van Horn were both in consultation with the commissioners and the creative act of the board again thoroughly discussed dis-cussed The attorneys declined however how-ever to give an opinion as to the mayors authority to order out the police po-lice force and send it outside of the city limits and took the matter tinder advisement until this afternoon In answer to a number of inquiries the commission late last night received word from Governor West at Ogden that Judge Miner had just granted the permanent injunction restrxining the Southern Pacific from dumping the army of unemployed upon the city of Ogden and territory of Utah ani ordering order-ing the company to send the men back to the coast The situation remains unchanged on the outside and the army is being guarded as before The governor gover-nor could not say when the Salt Lake police force would be released An adjournment ad-journment was taken by the commission commis-sion without definite action |
