Show THE COMMONWEALEKS ENCAMPED BETWEEN AMERICAN FORK AND PLEASANT GROVE 4 Spirit of Disobedience to General Gen-eral Carter Growing and There Were Many Desertions Yesterday Provo May 1L Carter and his followers follow-ers expect to arrive here tomorrow Tonight To-night they are camped between American Fork and Pleasant Grove having traveled but eight miles today At present all is not peace among the followers and a spirit of disunion is beginning to manifest itaslf It appeared in this form today Carter desired to march on to Provo but his men true and tried were tired and protested They wanted to rest and rest they did notwithstanding the commands com-mands of the general The people throughout the southern part of the country coun-try begin to think that when Spnngville or Spanish Fork is reached there will be a protracted rest unless a train Is secured se-cured or a disbandment takes place for Spanish Fork canyon and the desert beyond bey-ond do not hold In store many inducements induce-ments for industrials of the Carter order Upon the line of march today nothing ot any particular importance transpired further than an occasional wav ng of flags and the brandishing by Carter Car-ter of his broadsword The meadow land along the turnpike between American Fork and Pleasant Grove affords a pleasant camping ground for them tonight Tents are pitched camp fires are burning ajid a forest w flags are waving The selection of the camping ground is chosen with caution half way between two flourishing towns the leaders no doubt hoping by so doing to receive aid from both localities Sheriff Brown of Utah county has spent much of his time among them the pat three days and he intends as far as possible pos-sible to prevent any trouble by the armys presence The citizens In this locality are exhibiting the utmost indifference concerning their presence and Mayors Holbrook of Provo and Hall of Springville are constantly advising he people to attend to their labors and allow he army to shift for itself It is the general feeling among the people here hat the army will disband in a lew days and the cooler their reception the sooner will the industrials realize their position and change their mode of procedure Already Al-ready are small parties beginning to leave many of them traveling in advance of the army trying when possible to steal a ride At 5 p m today about twentyfive deserters marched into Provo They came along the Rio Grande Western track and it is thought that tonight they will take their departure on the blind baggage Mr Welbv has spent considerable time south during the past week and he seems con ident that no attempt will be made to take by force an entire train but your correspondent is not informed as to whether or not he proclaims himself able to prevent a brakebjam passage of the army out of the territory |
