Show A GLITTEREfG SHOWER OldTime Campaign Buttons Mistaken Mis-taken for Gold Eagles New York May Workmen tearing tear-ing down a rear twostory building near the northwest corner of Twenty third and Twentyfourth cvenue were greatly excited when a shower of what looked like gold eagles fell upon them from among the timbers Work was suspended and there was a general scramble for the treasure I was soon found however that the shining discs were not coins They were campaign badges of a generation ago IThey were tokens worn by Lincoln men and McClellan men in 1864 and emblems of the Grant and Seymour followers in 1868 Altogether there were about fifty thousand of them Some of them had tiny likenesses of the nominees in whose honor they were worn and others oth-ers had various devices which would stir the blood of old time politicians who had long ago forgotten them |
