Market Mar-ket Easy but n Decided Indifference Indiffer-ence as to Speculation 1 New York May 11R G Dun Cos weekly review of trade The speculation In grain has again broken records with t t the lowest price ever made for wheat s although receipts are smaller than a year ago while exports are smaller by more than a quarter The prevailing belief is the yield will as in recent years far exceed the government indications which f are again pointing to a short crop i Corn has changed but little and corn products have been fairly steady with oil and coffee unchanged but cotton is weaker in tone although receipts from plantations are a little smaller than a year ago I is a striking evidence of the general lack of onfidence that there is so little spe ulat while money is f abundant almost beyond precedent One large failure about > doubled the aggregate ag-gregate of liabilities for firms failing in the week ending May 3 which would otherwise have been quite small but were 2922792 The number and the general gen-eral average of liabilities are still encouragingly verge couragingly shrinking For four weeks of Apnl liabilities reported were SS86S62 of which S36S7220 were of manufacturIng manufactur-ing and 54077693 of trading concerns For the past week the failures have been 206 in the United States acrainst 257 last year and 7nfn Canada against 23 last year with none of special Importance although four failures of banks are included ON WALL STREET New York May iLA more uninteresting uninterest-ing day has not been experienced in Wall street for months The speculation was stagnant and even the rumormongers rumormon-gers were at work but little The total transactions wore iess than 90000 shares and in only two stocks Sugar and Chicago Chi-cago Gas did the sales exceed 10000 shares St Paul and General Electric made some appearance In the dealings but the rest of the list was sadly neglected I seemed as if the speculative fraternity at large had taken a breathing spell awaiting developments on which to operate oper-ate leaving it to the roomtraders to get up a semblance 6f a market I was expected that the gold engagements engage-ments for Saturday would reach 53000000 and they did come within 5100000 of that figure This incident had not therefore fgre effect on the speculation All of the gold withdrawn for export came from the United States treasury The trading at the opening was firm but upon a slight pressure to sell Sugar gave way and a few other shares a small fraction but the general market was without movement except Chicago Gas ad Lake Shore which advanced z > R and 1 respectively During the first hour the fluctuations were still narrower and the trading in lighter volume The prevailing tone during the morning was firmness but after midday the market became heavy and during the afternoon the tendency of prices was downward The dealings were very irregular during the last fifteen minutes of business and the market closed without change The bond market was firmer with small business The total sales of stocks today were S96S3 shares including American Sugar 22400 Burlington 3 O Chicago Gas 16 5 Whisky 2200 General Electric 8000 St Paul 5200 REVIEW OF THE STOCK MARKET New York May Bradstreets review of the stock market tomorrow will say Entire absence of any bull professional interests in speculation ineffectual efforts ef-forts by bear traders to produce liquidation liquida-tion and manipulation on the one or two industrial stocks made up the record of this weeks stock market Transactions have been on an exceedingly limited scale Jurope having done nothing while outside participation as guag d by the action by commission brokerage firms is at a very low ebb The Okl market was re 1f waiting for an apperance of the amended tariff in the Senate but the publication o trif the measure being attended by reports indicative in-dicative of further delay and possible conflict con-flict between the two houses of Congress its effects were slight if not disappointing ingThr continuance of the gold shipments to Europe which amounted for the weeK to 6000000 has attracted attention but appears to have had no influence on speculative spec-ulative sentiment The extreme ease of the money market mar-ket is in this respect a controlling factor and indeed furnishes the most cogent reason of the absence of any tendency io liouidrte Interest in the industrials centered cen-tered HI usual in Sugar which was the object of manipulation starting with a break and followed up by indecisive fluctuations AS VIEWED BY BRADSTREET I t New York May Bradstreets review I re-view of the state of trade tomorrow will say Warm weather has stimulated farm work as well as sales in seasonable lines of merchandise but renewed tariff uncertainty I un-certainty tends to prolong the period during which merchants will continue to I buy tor actual needs only evidences of which fact have appeared Bank clearings this week amount to 5903000000 a decrease of 55 per cent I from the week before and 3 decrease of 14 per ent compared with the second week of May last year when the total 1 clearings were among the largest on I record The great coal mineis strike has been I extended in the far west and portions of Maryland irf the Virginia and this j has been followed by an increase in the number of industrial shut downs due to I increasing scarcity of fuel Not far I from 175000 men are reported idle in the I coal trad alone and with those idle or I striking in other lines the total out of I work is not less than 225000 I Destruction fs property has been a feature fea-ture of the coal strike in Pennsylvania and Alabama The Pennsylvania and the Aabama Baltimore Ohio railroads are reported confiscating coal in transit I is suggested sug-gested to ship Duluths excess stock of ooal to Chicago to relieve the fuel famine fam-ine Scarcity of Bessemer pig has caused a sharp advance and billets as well are higher hut the increased demand is based on prospective scarcity due to lack of fuel fuelAt western points producers report firmness of soft steel and mills supplied with orders for seeral months Shapes and plates are firmer but in the face of this foundry irons in instances are weaker in price A potent influence favoring fav-oring higher quotations for pig iron is the reduction in output within six weeks of about onethird and a prospect for an extension of restricted production A significant evidence of the condition of general trade Is found in the report of gross railway earnings during April which show a heavier decrease from the month last than total In the same lat year tot preceding months since January 1 113 per cent Increased railway earnings earn-ings last month compared with April 1S93 are few and trifling Total gross earnings for April this year by 118 companies com-panies are 30000000 against 34000000 last year For four months of 1894 gross earnings amount to 5123000000 a decrease from the corresponding time last year of 133 per cent Pacific railroads show the smallest heaviest decrease and trunk lines the Even an unexpectedly bullish report by the agricultural department failed to stimulate wheat prices in the face of excessive Argentine and Russian shipments ship-ments Increased supplies in and afloat for Europe and heavy stocks in the United States t Exports ttes wheat both coast United States and Canada this week continue in fair volume 2815762 bushels ompared with 2775000 bushels last year 2712000 in the second week of May last year > = 3621000 bushels in the like week of 1892 In eastern markets the demand for wool is quiet and sales small but broken stocks tend to steady quotations General trade remains dull in many manufacturing lines at Buffalo Cleve manufacturng lnes land Detroit Cincinnati Louisville Milwaukee Mil-waukee Minneapolis and Omaha except that at the lastnamed more activity is reported in dry goods and hardware rlr At Chicago also there are decreased volumes of sales with millinery and clothing while the natural result due to spring trade being completed and autumn au-tumn trading not having made itself felt is felt at some places Wheat prospects In eastern San Joaquin valley California are less favorable than last week Only two ships for loading load-Ing is available at San Francisco HAS BEEN TIPPED St Louis Mo May scale Opening trades were at Oli advance but steadily sold down lCtl4 I cents and closed near the bottom The action of the market considering the report acton te port of last night was a great surprise to many operators The government report re-port made the condition 814 against 667 last month but being generally discredited discred-ited extreme weakness resulted Off rings r-ings were heavy from the start and increased in-creased as the session advanced a noticeable notice-able feature being the free selling by the house which took large quantities just prior to the close yesterday Par covered freely on the days decline and his purchases proved a supporting sup-porting factor t the market The decline de-cline caught some stop loss orders around 551 The efforts on the part of the buyers buy-ers of yesterday to realize at the open ing helped to cause the market to rule easy from the start The corn market was rather dull Fine weather prospective larger receipts and the action of wheat all combined to make the situation weak Weak opening trades showed little change but sold off under fair offerings I 4 rallied V4 cent changed some ruled easy and closed buts but-s from the
