Show THE WATER SUPPLY Salt Lake City May 10 1894 Editor of The Herald Dear sirNoting your comment on the action of the superintendent of waterworks in todays issue in which you characterize said action as verging verg-ing on the idiotic I beg leave to say that the idiocy if there be any is chargeable to a former administration that in its over Yeening anxiety to inaugurate in-augurate splendid public improvements was in too big a hurry to stop and determine de-termine the best source of supply before be-fore involving the city in heavy expenditures ex-penditures In my humble opinion the action of the present superintendent in cutting out Parleys Creek until the spring freshet is passed Was eminently proper if the owners of laws do not mind passing their acre of real estate between their teeth the rest of us ought to be excused Yours truly WILLIAM H BURTON We give place to the foregoing that our correspondent may have his hearing hear-ing But we do not see that what he says has much relevance to the question ques-tion The order was issued to cease the sprinkling of lawns except for two hours in the evening At the same time volumes of water were running to waste There was no scarcity of water for household purposes or for Ian I-an thlng I else that was needed The restriction was very inconvenient for a great many owners of a patch of green ground It was likely to spoil many lawns which are an ornament to the city There was in the general opinion no good reason for the limitation limita-tion The order is I now rescinded wes we-s so that ends the matter for the present The Herald has nothing to say about the original cause for the foolery But I it has to say now that during last year I lawns were sprinkled ad libitum and I in addition to that in lots where the irrigating ditches had been rendered useless through the idiocy of street grading water from the hydrants was used for irrigation by the consent of the water department And unless < some change is made very soon to bring about a remedy the samemeans will have to be resorted to In order to save fruft trees and vegetation from destruction With a watermaster this year who understands Ws business 4 < < and also has good common sense we expect to see the trouble rectified The < Herald said nothing about cutting II cut-ting out Parleys creek and as that source of supply is now running its liquid length along there is no need to say anything further oh that matter except that filters will now be at a premium or there will be more grit than is necessary in this peaceful community |
