Show CLARKS PROMOTION Union Pacific Officials Hail it With Joy TROUBLE OVER THE INDICTMENTS hors May Come than Ilt first Anticipated Fast Trains on the U P Between Qniaha and Denver OMAHA Neb April 2SSpecial telegram tele-gram to THE HERALD The news of S H H Clarks election as president of the Union Pacific was hailed with joy at bed quarters this morning because it is understood under-stood to mean that the present subofficials and employees will continue in their positions posi-tions undisturbed by an unfriendly management man-agement The office flag was run up on the big building at Ninth and Farnam streets and a general jubilation ensued This unexpected turn in affairs may mean a great deal for Omaha It is already announced nounced that ll Clark will again take up his residence here which is said to be the first time that the head of the Union Pacific has had his home in this city From this change of residence it is assumed that he will devote most of his time and attention to the affairs of the Union Pacific He has at St Louis an able assistant in the person of George Smith who has been mentioned as u possible 8UC cessor to him as general manager of the Missouri Pacific I is not known here whether Mr Clark will continue his connection ection with thai system but it is argued if he docs that he will shift much of the burden and detail to the younger shoulders ofIr Smith At any rate the change 1 egarued in railroad circles as an important import-ant gain for Omaha Later information indicates in-dicates that Mr Clark will not retain his Connection with the Missouri Pacific There is likely to be more trouble than at first anticipated grow out of the indictments indict-ments found against Union Pacific officials at Topeka Although ostensibly a fight made by the inferior jobbers of Kansas to get the Missouri river rate on California sugar it will bo farreaching in its effect and it if i thought the officials are after the Rio Grande Western and Denver Sa Rio Grande people as well as the Santa Fe General Freight Agent Monroe in talking about the indictments sail The rate complained ot has been an open one for two years and a similar principle has governed all transcontinental trans-continental lines on this business Like charges may with entire propriety bo made against the Santa Fe Missouri Mis-souri Pacific Burlington Rock Island Southern Pacific Atlantic Pacific Rio Grande Western Denver Rio Grande the Northern Pacific and Great Northern All of these lines have given similar rate and have done business openly so that there ought to be no great difficulty to get evidence of the alleged discrimination While specific cases of illegal rates are < mentioned in the Topeka complaints the fact is that it is a general principle that is i involved Tho Union Pacific has been selected se-lected as a scapegoat for some apparent reason No action has been taken by the accused officials nor will there be until the papers arrive from Topeka The only thing to be done at present is to give bal and await the action of tho courts I cannot can-not however but think this is a test case and may be far reaching in effect The Union Pacific not to be outdone by t other roads out of Omaha will expedite the fast mail service between Omaha and western points by putting on n sast train next Sunday which promises to bo a record breaker The train will leave I Omaha at 615 pm Fremont 720 Columbus Colum-bus 830 Grand Island 1005 Kearney 1105 North Platte 1225 am Jule bur 220 and arrive at Denver at 735 am I will carry a chair car and a sleeper and I will be the fastest regular passenger tiai I ever run between tho two cities Th I speed of this new service will be best I understood by a comparison with the fast trains of the east and the limited trains between Chicago and New York wi probably afford the fairest basis Tho great Pennsylvania limited covers tho ms Miles of that route in twentj five hour an average of thirtysix ana a half miles an hour The Michigan Central makes its 970 miles in twenty six hours and twentyfive minutes an average of thirty MX and nine tenths miles The Lake Shore makes It Smiles 9SO S-miles also in twentysix hours and twentyfive minutes an average of thirty seven and onetenth miles The Union Pacific Pa-cific route to Denver is 571 miles long and the new train will make it in fourteen and onethird hours an average of thirtynine hour and eightyfour one hundredths miles per |
