Show 1 Arizonas ri < l anlnjves To those who regard Arizona as only a wild and uncultivated domain it maybe may-be of interest to know that this territory terri-tory in matters of education is a striking strik-ing example of the American idea of what constitutes civilization and progress pro-gress The public schools and system of free education are equal to any state in the union and yet Arizona is not a state The schools are maintained by a direct i di-rect tax levied on the people at the rate of 15 cents on the hundred dollars dol-lars of taxable property Besides this the several counties are authorised to levy not to exceed 80 cents on the hundred hun-dred dollars Arizona has the distinction distinc-tion of paying more money per capita for the education of her children than any other state and territory except California and Dakota the rate being 12 for each census child Not only are these significant facts as based upon up-on the number of census children but it is further of credit to know that I Arizona pays more per capita for children chil-dren in actual attendance at school school than any eastern northern or southern state the amount beIng 3868 |
