Show DEED OF A DEMON II I I THREE MEN AXD A CHILD ARE SHOT TO DEATH One of the Most Horrible Crimes in the History of Texas Five Shots Fired in a Crowded Station i Many People Injured 1 I Houston Feb 19Tonight at 10 oclock here w committed in the Grand Central depot one of the most horrible crimes in the j history of Texas Tex-as j i asJim Mitchell a Richmond man long known for his desperate character i shot to death three men one little child and wounded a woman Mitchell had been in the city l < day and had I j imbibed more or less intoxicants As near as can be learned one of o1e the men not knowing the desperate character qf Mitchell attempted tore I i monstrate with him for boisterous and 1 ungentlemanly conduct in h station land he resented the remonstrance When the others joined the first to remonstrate with Mitchell the des1 I shooting perado pulled a revolver and began shoolng Thei station was crowded and when I I the shooting began there was a rush for the doors The crowd was panic stricken with the exception of a few j I brave men and many were badly hurt in the crush Mitchell emptied his revolver and with each shot some one fell first three men then a wonian andi child The noise of the shboting brought ofil cers to the scene and Mitchell who had been almost forgotten after the firing by the few who remained in the station quietly reloading his revolver preparing pre-paring to shoot some one else or making mak-ing his escape was taken into custody and hurried to jail i News of the awful tragedy soqn spread over the city and the most intense in-tense excitement prevailed Men gathered gather-ed from ever quarter and soon > a great throng surrounded the station and then the jail and threats of lynching lynch-ing were heard on every side Extra officers were placed on duty and it is hoped they will be able to prevent a lynching and the law will be allowed to take its course |
