Show DI iIG118Ill11i1ISI1UftS1 I H D Secretary Herbert the Guest of Sat Lake Yesterday A PLEASANT RECEPTION VISITS TO SALTAIR THE TABER XACLE AND FORT DOUGLAS The Secretary Is Greatly Plenseil with Salt Lake ana the Surrounding Surround-ing Country Colonel Henry Vat terson the Famous Kentucky Editor Ed-itor Also In the City Salt Lake had the 4 honor yesterday of 1 entertaining Secretary T Secre-tary Herbert of the I United States navy I 1 The distinguished i y gentleman arrived i here early yesterday morning over the I Union Pacific in his private car Delaware I I ke Dela-ware accompanied by his daughter I Miss Leila Herbert his niece MisS Edith Ed-ith Buell Mrs Nlcou and his aide Lieutenant Lieu-tenant Ramsey The secretary is on his way to San Francisco and the coast to confer with II the naval officers ithere in regard to the sealing troubles and also to inspect the naval yard I was not generally I known that he would make a stop at I Salt Lake otherwise his reception would have been of a more formal nature although i could scarcely have been more pleasant Secretary Herbert is a most genial gentleman and those who met him yesterday yes-terday readily understood why it was that he was so popular with the people of his state and at the capital This was his first visit to S l Lake and he was greatly pleased with the city and the surrounding country expressing himself in words of warmest praise concerning both The gentleman is deeply engrossed with his work and takes a just pride in the progress made by the navy of the United States Secretary Herbert served in Congress with Hon George Q Cannon and Hon John T Caine and has a warm place in his heart for both of those gentlemen gentle-men At 1030 yesterday morning the visitors with a number of prominent citizens attended an organ recital at j orgn II the Tabernacle after which the party I visited Fort Douglas accompanied by Governor West Hon John T Caine I SurveyorGeneral Snow and others Returning Re-turning to the city a luncheon was served at the Templeton and at 3 p m the entire party with Colonel Watter son and a number of Salt Lakers made a trip to Saltair The visitors were enthusiastic over the great pavilion and enjoyed the run to the lake immensely im-mensely Last evening the secretary and party ciic left for the coast over the Union Pa BIOGRAPHICAL Hilary A Herbert was born in Lau rensville South Carolina but when a child his father removed to Greenville Butler county Alabama After following follow-ing preparatory studies the required length of time he completed his education educa-tion at the University of Alabama and the University of Virginia and then took up the study of law When the war broke out he cast his fortunes with I his state and entered the confederate service a a captain and was promoted to the colonelcy of the Eighth Alabama I volunteers At the battle of the Wilderness Wilder-ness May 6 1S61 he was disabled and I resumed his practice at Greenville Alabama Ala-bama where he remained until 1872 1 In that year he removed to Montgomery f Montgom-ery which ha since been his home He was elected to the Fortyfifth Forty I sixth Fortyseventh Fortyeighth I Fortyninth Fiftieth Fiftyfirst and I Fiftysecond Congresses as a Democrat at the latter election receiving 10611 votes against 2681 for the opposing aginst candidate ppsng didate All through his life the secre tary ha been interested in naval matter mat-ter and early in his congressional career ca-reer became recognized as an authority At the time of President Clevelands election he was chairman of the committee com-mittee on naval affairs and his appointment appoint-ment as secretary was generally considered con-sidered a wise one and his splendid administration of that Important department de-partment has proven i |
