Show SEEN AND HEARD The sight of some fine Utah fruit canned Intended for the Worlds fair brought to mind what the Philadelphia Press said not long since It was that we were indebted to Pompeians for our process pro-cess of canning fruit some figs having been discovered in fine preservation some nineteen centuries ago Who shall that our works do not live after us1 No doubt I it was the work of some thrifty housewife whose only thought was for the comfort of I the head of her home Little did she dream that It would give an impetus to a I splendid business of the New World I I Columbus was to discover What thoughts and feelings must have filled the minds and hearts of those Americans who ate that fruit Truly we are of more account than we often think How crowded the street cars were on the night before Thanksgiving Every arm full of the good things which make up that dinner of the year to which all thoughts and hearts turn Christmas dinner Is after all only secondary to the delight of the children with their store of pretty things Santa Claus has brought But Thanksgiving takes in the absent from their homes so that the feeling of Out in the cold world shall not enter their hearts It is the reuniting of home folks the time u > pause and think of what little tlmo we really have to quietly enjoy the ties of kindred and home m this busy restless rest-less world So that when we saw the chickens the turkeys and that great white goose which was carried home that night tin pity in our hearts that its pretty white neck would lie beneath the hatchet gives place to peace and contentment for so many blessings How devoted some women are to pets I Dogs cats and birds come in for a goodly share of madams caresses It was in the years gone by that old maids seemed the only ones that bore the ridicule for such demonstration but that funny specimen of single blessedness seems entirely to have l disappeared and to have cast her mantle I upon the sometime pretty matron with the tight curling locks or the married dame without children Well the single women havo not timer so they leave all petting of the dumb animals to their more fortunate sisters who have husbands to keep them in idleness Of all the queer things to be fond of is a pet toad and yet the writer once knew a lovely young girl who gave all I her time to one A bird can sing and so reward re-ward faithful attendant and a deg will follow one about will protect its mistress but a toad seems good for naught Art in Salt Late has made rapid progress and is being felt quite forcibly by all our citizens The reception given some time since by Mr and Mrs Damn showed to all how far we are advanced in the line of sculpture And again that of Mr Har wood was a great delight and is sure to do good The oil and water colors were i very fine and now the Womans Relief Corps have brought out some beautiful specimens of china painting by our talented talent-ed lady artists Mesdames Harkness Justice Jus-tice Pearley Byers Wantland Clute and Miss Monroe When once a roal interest is awakened in art the taste is sure to grow and spread rapidly for it is the need which is felt to lift us out of tile everyday duty routine and place us for a while at least into the higher and more poetical realm |
