Show THRILLING 1SCA11 E FROM FIRE AND A VATER HalrBaisinfif Experiences of the Crew of the Arch8l 11 OVERTURNED I A VIOLENT SQUALL Halting Between Being Burned 01 Drowned I t Seaman Lowered Into the Cabin and the Fire Extinguished After Hanging to the Poop For Hours in Momentary Peril of Being Sent to the Bottom the John C Potter Hove in Sight and the Men Wero Rescued From Death Just In the lick of Time S San Francisco March OThe ship John C Potter from Nanaimo arrived in port tonight having on board Captain Cap-tain Dawson and thirteen of the crew of the British bark Archer abandoned off Cape Flattery March 18 The men tell a story of almost incredible incred-ible hardship and of a thrilling escape from the capsized bark only after great difficulty and danger The bark left Victoria March 17 Alter leaving the strait March 18 avery a-very heavy snow storm was encountered encoun-tered The storm kicked up a wild sea The main topsail was carried away While the men were aloft an unusually violent squall struck the ship The ballast bal-last shifted and the ship listed The men managed to reach the deck1 just as the vessel was overwhelmed by a tremendous sea turning her clean I over on her broadside Andrew Anderson carpenter and A B Evans seaman were carried away ana arownea The crew managed to cut away the weather lanyards and all the masts went over the sides The men succeeded in climbing outside and clung to the poop Their position was one of great peril and to add to their terrors fire broke out in the cabin The ship seemed also to be sinking and it appeared to be a question of only as to whether the crew would first be overcome by fire or water Finally a seaman Wilbur Royden was lowered into the cabin and there he managed to put out the fire An attempt was made to launch the life boat As the boat left the vessel four of the crew sprang aboard leaving leav-ing their unfortunate companions holdIng hold-Ing to the side of the wreck With much effort a life buoy was rigged to the log line and then passed to the lifeboat life-boat By holding on to the buoy and springing into the water the men were one by one hauled aboard the boat i The snow squalls were yet violent S and much suffering was endured Only two oars were aboard the boat I Fortunately the ship John C Potter hove in sight half an hour after the escape from the vessel and responding tp their signals of distress took the I men aboard kindly cared for them and brought them to this city I |
