Show A BLOODLESS BATTLE THE LIVELY ENGAGEMENT AT FORT DOUGLAS YESTERDAY The Entire Garrison of Five Hundred Hun-dred Were Engaged Great Orovrd f Spcctutors From thc City An immense crowd of people numbering I num-bering perhaps 2000 went up from the city yesterday to witness the sham battle bat-tle at Fort Douglas I The entire garrison numbering 500 j men participated in the fray and they seemed to enjoy i a much as did the spectators I The charging bodies of soldiers the glistening rifles the rattle of musketry and the rapid evolutions of the soldiers all went to make up an animated and intensely interesting scene I Viewed from a military standpoint the battle was an unqualified success and I was instructive to the boys in blue The details of this bloodless engagement engage-ment are as follows Lieutenant Colonel Coates < wan in command of the entire drill and assembled the eight companies or two battalions on the central parade ground at 1 p m from whence the two opposing forces were marched to their respective psitions THE OPPOSING FORCES The First battalion in command of Captain Palmer was on the defensive and represented the outposts of an I army in camp It comprised company I B with Lieutenant Preston in command com-mand company D Oaptaiiii Morrison I company E Captain McFarland com pany F Captain Woodbury and occupied occu-pied the position from the Salt Lake city railway tracks cast on the lower parade ground The Second battalion commanded by Captain Richards and Lieutenant Wright adjutant was composed of companies A under Lieutenant Spencer C Captain Allen G Lieutenant Sorley and H Captain WhKall and constituted the attacking party They < took thjir position at the Filter house om the Emigration car acqueduct THE ENGAGEMENTS OPENS The engagement was commenced by the latter battalion advancing east towards to-wards the position occupied by the defense I de-fense An advance guard was thrown out followed by the fighting line and it by the supports ant < reserves Firing I was kept up until within about 200 I yards of the ntr nchment of the defense I de-fense at which time the rapid fire was ordered and thert the charge The defensive I de-fensive position was rendered untenable by the occupation of the cesspool on their right flank which brought an enfilading en-filading or flank fire on the line of the First battalion compelling them to retire re-tire defeated THE BOYS CONGRATULATED At the close of the drill the regiment was formed in linefand congratulatory remarks were mojle by General Pcn rcse who praised them for the efficient manner in which the maneuvers had been executed I FINE MUSIC I The regimental band discoursed sweet music through the afternoon There were numbers of ladies among the spectators and brightcolored fall costumes were seen everywhere The I day was a perfect one anti the many tourists and strangers present must have carried away a lively impression t of the loveliness of our great city and especially of one of its chief beauties Fort Douglas After the dismissal of the regiment a number of officers with a few friends from the city assembled in the officers1 club rooms and passed a pleasant hour in jovial social intercourse I |
