| Show OUR SEWER SY EM I Some Fifty 01 Mom Connections Already I ad i 4 THE GOOD EFFECTS MANIFEST Another Blp Stride Towards the Goal Our Fair City Is Destined Soon to Reach With the completion of sewer district distrct No1 which will ba in about two months Salt Lake citys sewerage system may bo I said to bo fairly begun Tho < city council designated this district some time ago and as a starter provided that the limits of tho district should be from North Temple I south to Fourth South street and from First East to First West Tho work of laying mains was begun as soon as the cit engineer had established the levels and up to tho present time over fifty connections have been made of which the majority are on Main street The pipe of which the main sewer is composed is 24 inches in diameter and tho amount in use is nearly nine miles the sewer system proper running from Fifth East to tho Jordan river Tho grade is a good one and is such that all refuse can bo easily carried off and no clogging of pipes can ens e In most cities all laterals are formed of sixinch pipe but the authorities in their wisdom deemed it expedient to use a larger variety hence all laterals in this city are eight and ten inch pipe When the system was first inaugurated the hotel owners were among the first to take active steps in securing connection The Cullen and Walker house proprietors at once began work and were followed by many other business men As an example of what tho cost of these improvements was it may be stated that the outlay of Major Erb was from 3000 to 4000 while the Cullert hotel was not far behind The results thus far have been highly satisfactory Prior to the introduction of the sewer system the waste matter was conveyed by pipe to cesspools which were a constant source of annoyance required but a very short time to fill one of these and then a new one had to be excavated This had been going on for so long a time that the premises of both houses were one boquet of cesspools the odor from which was abominable Since the sewer system was introduced I however all this is changed and tho odorif erous nuisances are no more In a conversation with Sower Inspector Evans yesterday the latter remarked to a HEKAID man that ho had unbounded confidence confi-dence in tho future of the sewer system in Salt Lake Said he The creation of district No 1 is only a starter and a very successful one at that The residents are delighted with the arrangement ar-rangement and are perfectly willing to assume as-sume an expense which rids them of a nuisance nui-sance Under the old rule tho cesspools were a nuisance I was impossible to grid g-rid of the filth inasmuch as it remained on the premises Now itIs carried away for miles and u general feeling of relief prevails pre-vails Since the adoption of the new ordinance ordi-nance which places tho entire matter under un-der the control of the board of neann ana tue city engineer we hope for even better results As regards future progress I anticipate a rapid advancement and think that it will not be long ere another district is created possibly two But matters are being pushed as rapidly as possible For the past two weeks the plumbers havo been on a strike and this has delayed matters some but now that the difficulty is over thing will go ahead again The work done is all of a firstclass order It couldnt be better bet-ter I have overseen everything and am prepared to state thatno city has ever had better work done I The citys action in the matter has ere ated considerable interest The Rio Grande Western people without invitation invita-tion have put in a sort of system of their own and have laid 5000 or 0000 feet of pipe from their property As to probable cost I cannotsay lisa lis-a difficult matter to unjudge and no definite approximate can be made until the vork is i completed At least two more months will be required to finish all the connections in District No 1 When this is done some idea may be formed The change for the bettor is wonderful Where back yards were one mass of filth everything is now comparatively clean and nothing offensive can be seen I is a great thing for Salt Lake and I havo to say the peplo are heart in accord with it |
