Show 4 TOO IMPRACTIABLE Policy of the Farr 18 Nationa Alliance A CALL FOR A CONVENTION In 1802 to Nominate 1 Presidential Candida Government Loans on Land Bail roails for the People r r OMAHA Jan 28The National Farmers alliance had a lively discussion at todays session on an amendment to the constitu tion to exclude women from acting as dele gates and it was finally voted down An amendment making all laboring men ble to al eligi membership was tabled by a large l vote The remainder of the morning was occupied in discussing minor chan changes and a > recess was taken until 2 oclock this after I noon In the afternoon tho report of the com mittee on resolutions which was quito lengthy was considered by paragraphs and adopted It begins with the following ambleWhereas folowing pre Whereas Owing to the oppression that has been that heaped upon us by grasping monopolists bines capitalists trusts and com we believe it is time for action and Whereas The National Farmers alli ance in convention al assembled does asembled moro emphatically declare against the present Ioro system of government as manipulated by the Congress of the United States and the tht legislatures of the several states Therefore we declare in favor of hold lug a convention on February 22 1S92 to fix a date and nines fin fhr iinTiirnr nf convention to nominate candidates for the offices of President and YicoPresident of1 1 tho United States In this preliminary convention represen tation shall be by one delegate from each state in the union The resolutions favor the abolition of all national banks and that surplus funds bo loaned to individuals upon land security an a low rate of interest declares for the Aus tralian ballot law demands the foreclosure of the mortgages hem by the government on railroads discountenances gambling in stocks and shares and favors the election of the President und Vicepresident by popular vote As the farmers of the United States largely outnumber any other class of citizens they demand the passage of laws of reform not as party measures but for the good of the government Alli ance members shall take part as partisans in the political struggle as affiliating with Republicans or Democrats The interstate commerce law should ba so amended ana enforced as to allow the railroads a reasonable income on the money invested The resolutions further demand that the mortgaged on the Union and Cen tral Pacific roads be foreclosed at once and the roads bo taKen charge of by the gov ernment and run in the interest of the neo pie with a view to extending both lines to the eastern seaboard The free and unlimited coinage of silver is favored and that the volume of currency be increased to 850 per capita A demand is made that all paper money bo placed on an equality with gold Another resolution declares that wo land owners pledge ourselves to demand that the government allow us to borrow money from the United States at the same rate of interest as do the banks All mortgages bonds and shares of stock should bo as United States Senators should be elected by popular vote Toe laws regarding the liquor traffic should be so amended as not to be a prece dent for endangering the morals of our children and destroying the usefulness of our citizens Webeliove women have the same rights as their husbands to hold property and we are in sympathy with any law that will give our wives sisters and daughters full representation at the polls Our children should be educated for honest labor and agricultural colleges should bo established in every state Liberal pensions are favored also the passage of the Conner lard bill Recess The conference with the Farmers Mutual Benefit association reprepresentatives to night decided the organization could affili ate and could not consolidate |
