Show The Bancroft Sale Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEWPOKT R I March 4Aquidneck hall was crowded to excess yesterday when Auctioneer Burlinghnm began selling the household furniture of the late George Bancroft Agents were present representing represent-ing several well known cottagers and also the heirs A large number of curios were bought in for Mr Carroll of Baltimore Mr Leland lately of New York was also a bidder Very few things however brought the prices expected An engrav ing of General Jackson presented by himself him-self to Bancroft was bought by Alexander Bliss of Washington Thero was a spirited contest for a painted dinner set of 170 pieces It was bought by W S Law ton of Newport Two quaint cab nets with marble tops were bought in for tho heirs as were four cholco engravings Tho engravings of Lincoln Lafayette Sir Humprey Davy and other celebraties all brought fancy prices and were bought for cottagers whoso names were refused The telescope by Clark of Cambridge that the venerable historian used day and night on his piazza fronting the ocean was the desired de-sired object and was captured by Mr Mason of Newport for 75 Carvings statuary and a host of knicknacks were bid in by Mr Bliss The sale was continued con-tinued till next week on account of the storm Mr Bancrofts library desk and a hundred other objects of interest will be sold then including a beautiful lot of old china greatly valued by tho historian |
