Show THE SUGAR FACTORY TUE HERALD fears that its Republican contemporaries are making themselves ludicrous over the rejection of the sugar bounty bill by the legislature They are also posing the proprietors ol the sugar factory in an exceedingly ugly light in trying to make it appear that those gentlemen gentle-men have been actuated by greed whereas the truth is the contrary was the fact as to several of the more prominent men who took interest in the enterprise as we happen hap-pen to know Our opposition contempor aries all of which are more or less esteemed frantically shriek that the sugar industry has been destroyed by the legislative legis-lative refusal to grant the bounty and they groan it out that the money of the stockholders has been lost THE HERALD does not believe there is one of the shareholders share-holders who will say that he subscribed with the understanding or expectation that the territory would make good any loss height he-ight incur If there be one who will say this the public would like to known his name when he will be regarded as a mer enary rather than as an enterprising gentleman leman bent on developing the resources of the country But there is none Those gentlemen went into the sugarmaking industry dustry with something of patriotic motives the intention being to help the country by > providing labor for workingmen and a market for a farm product and also to retain in the community money sent out for the purchase of sugar and they went into the business to make money for themselves We know this for they were fortified with figures to prove that sugarmaking would be extremely profitable And we believe it will be profitable If it has not been soho so-ho first season there were icasons for the failure the chief of which were the inexperience in-experience in the matter of cultivating beets and the lack of knowledge as to the better soils in which to grow them We also know that the bounty cut ery little figure in the case for the company was organized ganized contracts let and work in active progress long before the government i bounty which is just double that of the territory was thought of and the government govern-ment bounty did not have tho effect of increasing in-creasing the capital stock or enlarging the plant in tho least But what we were going to say is that our Republican contemporaries are making themselves ridiculous in their scare talk 1 about the sugar factory Two years ago the legislature passed an net uto encourage manuf uctures and paying bounty therefor the sum appropriated being 3JOJO There was to be a bounty of 2 per ton on iron manufactured here J5 per ton on cast iron pipe lapwelded wrought iron pipe or tubing 1 cent per pound upon sugar and 1 cent per pound on rope and twino from hemp okra or other suitable plant grown in Utah The final section of the act is as follows The provisions of this act shall extend through the years 1830 and 1891 and the sum of 830000 or so much thereof as may be necesary is hereby appropriated for said bounties Prodded that not more than 15OOJ shall be drawn the first year and Prodded fuitier that if no bounty is claimed on any ono of the aforemeu tioncd articles in the year 1890 the provisions of this act shall extend so far as that article is concerned during tho year 1S92 After aggregate ag-gregate boucties have been allowed by the secretary of the territory upon the articles herein named to the amount of 530003 no further fur-ther bounty shall be allowed or passed by the territory during the time prescribed by this act Our friends of the unreasonable opposition opposi-tion will see when they read the above what guys they are making of themselves when they talk about crushing the sugar making industry As we understand it the sugar company drew of tho 30000 last year about 11000 leaving about 19000 to bo drawn this year as it is not likely that any other of the industries named will bo in operation in 1892 Now we respectfully submit that if tho sugar industry cannot be placed on its I feet with a boucty of 90000 in two years I tho federal government paying just double what is given by the territory the i propriety of continuing the business may iP well be called in question Even the most reckless and rantankerous advocates of r bouatygivinn will not say that the peoples money should be forever taken to maintain I a private enterprise The sugar company has no cause to complain com-plain and we dont believe it does complain com-plain Its shareholders are men of intelligence intelli-gence and business capacity They understand under-stand that if an industry cannot within reasnablo timo be made to support itself that industry cannot possibly be mado beneficial ben-eficial to the community that is to say if it Is forever going to cost more to produce sugar than sugar is worth whether the cost is met by individuals or the community commu-nity tho sooner wo stop making sugar the better They didnt go into the business with the understanding that they would draw dividends from the national and territorial ter-ritorial treasuries but with the confident expectation of earning dividends on their 1 invested capital and at tho same timo ben efitting tho territory Their confidence is not shaken and we dont believe they will thank certain newspapers for placing them 1 in the attitude of suppliants for charity |
