| Show HE ROPED THEM I IN The Swindling Trick Unearthed Before Judge Zane Yesterday AN ALLEGED CASE OF ADULTERY The Family Jar In Judge Bartchs CourtA Not Overlovlns Stepson A Grave Charge Made The rmooth slick man has again got in his work this time on the unsuspecting granger The facts In the case were uncovered before Judge Zane yesterday in a suit brought by J11 Harvey to recover 5150 from William Hammond who resides about live miles from Garfield Frank Hoffman appeared for the plaintiff and the defendant was represented by Judge Hoge From the evidence it appeared that in the spring of 1SS3 an oily tonged individual giving giv-ing his name as Eccles and representing himself him-self as the agent for the Farmers Field and Garden Seed company a mythical concern made a trip through Toocle county to introduce intro-duce to tne grangers White Scotch wheat i Eccles carried samples of this wheat in bottles and it met with great favor among the farmers Ho offered to w them a few bushels of this I wheat for seed at the price of 15 a bushel and also agreed that when they raised a crop of the grain he would buy from them the same number num-ber of bubbelb that they purchased from him at an advanced price Among those who bit was William Hammond He agreed to take ten bushels of the seed wheat at 815 per bushel and gave the agent his note for lf0 and Eccles then made a contract 10 purchase fifteen bushels of the crop raised from the seed He then departed and sometime some-time afterwards Mr Hammond received ten bushels of wheat But it was not white wheat nor was it Scotch wheat but just common ordinary or-dinary Utah grain such as the farmer had been raising for years and selling at less than a dollar dol-lar a busheL Hewas both mad and disgusted but finally concluded to plant the seed and give it a trial Did you plant itraskcd Mr Hoffman Oh yes i planted it replied Mr Hammond The agent said it would yield sixty bushels to the acre and warranted that it would be free from smut so I thought I would give it a chance Did you get sixty bushels to the acre inquired in-quired Mr Hoffman Well hardly replied the witness Was there any smut was the next question ques-tion So much that the chickens were the only things that could do auything with it I gave it all to them Mr Hoffman dropped the witness at this point and the case was submitted without argument This man Eccles secured notes from a number of farmers hereabouts by making the same representations re-presentations and there are other cases similar to the one tried yesterday that will come up soon The game was workedpuccessfullyin the east a few years ago and the farmers were swindled out of thousands dollars There the swindlers sold Bavarian hops while this fellow fel-low varied the game by selling Scotch wheat OTHER BUSINESS United States vs Edward D Crowther adultery witnesses for the defense ordered subpoenaed at the expense of the United States John S Cameron vs Robert S Campbell et al decree made confirming sale of real estate and quieting title as prayed Theo Lovendale ct al vs Elizabeth 1C Wool ley et at decree for plaintiffs quieting title as prayed They Are Charged With Adultery John Thompson an unmarried man and Mrs Betsey Egbert who reside at the mouth of Big Cottonwood were arrested by Deputy Marshal Franks yesterday on the charge of adultery They were brought to this city and taken before be-fore Norrell who set the examination exam-ination for next Tuesday at 2 p m and fixed the defendants bonds at 81500 each They found securities and were released The Giddy Girls Forfeit their Bonds Andrew Petra one lone drunk loomed up in I the police court yesterday morning and was fined 83 Lizzie Summers the keeper of a house of ill fame and Mary Wilson and Dolly Dory inmates in-mates of the same failed to appear when their cases werecalled and the keeper forfeited i0 while the two girls forfeited 525 each The case against Thomas Xiilan charged with battery was dismissed upon the defendant paying the costs amounting to Jl95 |
