Vll llJuruay u tlEHALU rojotsu vtj 3 met our old friend and citizen Mr Richard Morris who had just arrived from the southern country and whose face actually glistened with smiles which at once suggested sug-gested the question Have you any good news from the sunny south Yes said he lots of it all the way from the great Colorado Water is abundant abun-dant over the whole stock range of mountains moun-tains south of the Colorado river feed was never better cattle come up fat and fine len thousand steers have been sold and shipped to distant markets Mr Morris was enthusiastic in stating that when the lino of railway shall be extended ex-tended south to the coast the southern country will do her share in sustaining the tbrougu Jim Twenty miles south of St George the well known Pymm mine has been leased by a company composed of Higgins Wtute head Adams and Pymm Jr They have put up a smelter and are turning out an excellent quality of copper bullion a sample sam-ple of which has been sent to the chamber of commerce They have just struck a body of galena ore over wtiich they are very much elated A stack of bullion may be seen at Postmaster Pymms residence in St George which is an index to the wealth of that portion of Utahs mining country The abundant snows of last winter and plentiful rains in the spring have contributed contrib-uted to make a most deiighttul climate and u luxurious growth of grain and vegetation Wneat harvest is over and people are busy putting in stubble corn which with a good supply of water will insure a fine crop Grapes were never before abundant The almond and fruit crops were somewhat injured by frost and will not be so plentiful It has been an uncommon un-common spring cool and pleasant up to within six days ago There are heavy crops of lucern and potatoes are unsurpassed in size and quality A great amount of work has been done during the last six months on the gigantic canal of the Washington Irrigation company com-pany work on which has been suspended during the hot season He says the Washington factory has been leased by Thomas Judd and has been re modelled and refitted at a great expense Doing especially adopted ior the wording up of Dixey cotton into cotton batting in quantity sufficient to supply sup-ply the whole territory They have a two years supply already on hand without with-out the present years growth He hopes our merchants everywhere in Utah will note the fact As everyone knows who has been to St George a distance from here of 330 mil sonly s-only about 20ft of itcan be traveled by railway rail-way to Milford the remainder by stage for some years past that route was run by Woolley Lund Judd whose faithful service ser-vice can be attested by thousands of passengers pas-sengers Last June a new company composed com-posed of Corey Walker of Cedar city took the contract and stocked the line with fresh horses and new California coaches The route now from Milford to St George instead of by Rush lake will go through the following settlements Minersville Greensville Adamsville Beaver Buckhorn Paragoonah Parowan Summit Cedar Hamiltons Fork Kanar rah Bellevue Silver Reef Leeds Harrisburg Harris-burg Washington Middleton to St George Mr Morris was the first through passenger on this new route and speaks in glowing term of the energy and aoility of the new company in managing and getting the road in good running order Four changes made the first sixty miles to Cedar and five changes of ninety miles from Cedar to Milford It was amusing to hear him recite his experience of two days andtwo nights travel from St George the first 150 miles in a coach where his fat sides were jostled to and fro and up and down then the gay time he had with John Murdock of Beaver a cattleman cattle-man in the car and the quiet repose in a sleeper that brought him safely to this city and which fully prepared him as a contrast for his enjoyable ride in an electric car He wished to say for the benefit of strangcis and tourists that for the sum of d50 a trip from Salt Lake city to St Georgo and return re-turn can be made and the privilege of taking tak-ing in all the settlements and unbroken stretch of immense vallies of highly cultivated culti-vated fields and orchards He says the accommodations throughout are ample noting particularly the old Pane house of Parowan of twenty years standing and the new hotel of Cedar by Andrew Corey the headquarters of the stsgc line He also strongly recommends that the cattle and sheep mea of the southern settlcmentscall a convention and adopt a resolution to purchase suitable seed and reseed the vast ranges that have been entirely used up by sheep and drought If such a plan could be carried out and the range restored again to its cnce luxurious growth and some of Dr Fausts pureblooded pure-blooded > tock occupy the same the southern south-ern county wilt have no peer in the western wilds of America |
