| Show KIT TUB I THE RIG i I Billy Brennan Never Recovered Fl9 His KnockDown J HOW THE AFFAIR HAPPENED I t Was an Accident Dempsey Thinks Jackson is no Hatch for Sullivan Shwiii and MfAullfle to Fi lt SpecIal to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatcho CHICAGO July 5As a result of Thursday Thurs-day nights glove contest at Battery D Billy Brennan lies dead at the morgue and five of the men who fixed and abetted the fatal fight are locked up at Harrison street station awaiting the action of the coroners jury The officers arrested Frank Gerrard Brennans antagonist Patsy Carroll master mas-ter of ceremonies Patrick Gallagher the referee John Mclnerney one of Brennans seconds Harry Gilmore more Gerrards second and bicker Sailor Brown who with Mclnerney seconded Brennan has not yet been placed under arrest although the police have been looking for him ever since the fatal contest Parson Davies who was manager of the exhibition was not arrested although ho was given to unnerstand by the police that be might be wanted and they would expect ex-pect him to be within call Alter Brennan fell in the ring he was never conscious He was carried to the office in the building where he died yesterday morning Doctors Sherwood and Fenger made every effort to rouse the dying man but failed to do moro than prolong his life for a few moments mo-ments They had no hopes tar the poor ad from the beginning as an examination showed there was concussion of the brain Shortly after noon the county physician made an autopsy The post mortem showed thatdeath resulted from hemorrhage of the brain superinduccd by concussion The disposition of the body will be decided upon The friends of the unfortunate young man are anxious to send the body to Brooklyn N Y where he resided All who were in any way connected with the unfortunate affair feel very badly over the way in which the fight terminated I Captain Lawis who had charge of the police arrangements at the Battery said Brennan had received a good deal of punishment pun-ishment but I did not regard it as serious or I would have stopped the fight In my Opinion Brennan was not as badly punished n Smith was in his recent contest with Jackson What effect will this have on boxing ex hibitions here I have no authority t say but I would guess that we will have no more slugging matches Lieutenant Ross whs was present atthe battle with Captain Lewis expressed about the same opinion as his captain Gerrard was seen at the Harrison street station and said he was shocked at the result re-sult At the beginningof the fifth round he continued I thought I had much the best of the fight and I tried to knock Bren nan out and Brennan dodged and clinched to keep from getting hit He was not badly punished but he acted queerseemed to be groggy When herclinched he grabbed me r grogy around the waist and fell backward pulling me with him When he started to lull I could not help myself any Way and before I could realize we were both on the fioorr Harry Gilmore Gerrards second said LU I am more than sorry this thing happened hap-pened but it was an accident Just before the fatal fall the two boxers were talking to each other and it looked to me as i Brennan would stay the round out He was not hurt much although he acted queer John Mclnerney one of Brennans seconds sec-onds was asked if his principal showed any peculiar distress when he went up to the fifth No replied he seemed to be all right except that he was a little dizzy I have heard since the fight that he had been drinking during the early evening and that accounts for his queer conduct in the ring after the second round Brennan is the second man who has been killed in a glove contest in Chicago A colored boxer was killed by a fall in the ring at the West Side Turner hal about three years ago He had hardly got his hands up when his opponent hit him knocking him down When he fell the back of his head struck the floor with ter riblef orce and he never regained consciousness |
