| Show Railroad Accident Caused by Locusts I Special toTHE HEKALD Examiner Dispatshl NEW YORK July 5The Heralds Port of Spain correspondent says A fatal railroad road accidtnt has just been caused by locusts lo-custs on the line of the Central railroad about twenty miles from Caracas It appears ap-pears that an engine and car had been dispatched di-spatched to pick up the workmen employed on the construction of this road and bring them to Caracas to receive their pay When going down a steep grade the engine dashed through a swarm of locusts on the rails These pests as they were crushed by the wheels of the locomotive and car formed an oily substance which made the track so slippery that the brakes could no longer hold the train to the metals The engine dashing down at a terrific speed bounded from the line at a curve and ran into the side of the mountain The driver and fireman jumped off and in i doing so sustained severe injuries Another An-other engine was telegraphed for from Caracas and the foreman and a gang of men accompanied her with appliances to replace the runaway engine on the rails At the same steep gradient however engine en-gine No 2 also came into collision with the locusts this time with fatal results The engineer lost all control over her and as she dashed down the incline through the tunnel she left the rails at the same curve at which the first locomotive and the car had come to grief and telescoped them So terrible was the collision that the engines en-gines and car were broken to pieces Three men were instantly killed and fifteen fif-teen others more or less seriously injured One poor fellow in attempting to jump off the engine as she was going through the tunnel had his brains knocked oiL The I killed were buried on the spot |
