Show our OF SYMPATHY 1 Yesterday THE HERALD expressed the belief that tho Republicans of this territory terri-tory and especially the Mormon members of tho party would find a bad taste in their 1 mouths after reading what the Republican i i President had to say in his message about i Utah We were not mistaken Several I gentlemen of the political faith mentionod have been courageous and honest enough to I confess that they didnt like the President a little bit and to say that be has done the party incalculable injury in this territory We must think this latter expression is not well founded The Republican party in Utah is such an inconsequential affair that nothing which can be said I can materially affect it The people i of Utah are bright and intelligent they j I thinlc for themselves and reason for themselves and being bright and intelligent intel-ligent and reasoners they have mighty little use for the Republican party or its principles This is a Democratic community com-munity and is likely to continue such while the party of the people maintains the principles which have given it life and vigor through all these years i But as to the local Republicans who aro feeling that they have been iusulted and assaulted in the house of their friends Knowing that they are at least sincere even if They aro deceived they Jo not relish the idea of being holdup hold-up to the world as base hypcrites tr into in-to trick their fellows and the government While THE HERALD should not be expected expec-ted to manifest sympathy for sane men who have deliberately aligned themselves with the party which acknowledges B Hmn soN as its chief we are not going to make our wellmeaning but misguided friends of the opposition feel worse than they do Rather are we disposed to dry their tears and this we will try to do by referring to a contrast which has been drawn to Illustrate that all Republicans are not necessarily narrow and bigoted A gentleman who was hurt in his feelings by President HAKRISOSS uncalled for aspersions i asper-sions on the honesty and integrity of the Utah community recalled some incidents to illustrate the difference between men He told how years ago when General Gen-eral GHAXT was popularly supposed to be the most vigorous hater of the Utah community who had ever occupied the Presidents chair the President visited vis-ited this city was heartily welcomed by everybody and as cordially received all On another occasion the Sunday schoolchildren school-children to the numder of some thousands greeted tho general from the sidewalks the spectacle going direct to the heart of the great man and soldier The gentleman went further back and told how when a chief justice had overstepped the bounds of I law and justice in his zeal to make things uncomfortable for the people GRANT removed re-moved him with such suddenness as to literally lit-erally knock the heart out of the enthusiast GRAT did this although there was a question as to his legal right to summarily remove a judge GKAXT was a broadminded men and after his visit to this territory and seeing see-ing what had been achieved he was ready to concede that the community was not made up of knaves and scoundrels and people against whom the government and all men should turn their backs The gentleman then entertained the group of listeners by referring briefly lowell lo-well known incidents in the career of another Republican President the present occupant of the White House The contrast was striking Like GRANT H uuusox had also summarily removed a chief justice of Utah but for a different cause GRANT lowered his man because the latter was exceeding his authority and bringing bring-ing the law into contempt HARRISON kicked his out because the judge was not in harmony with the policy of tho administration admin-istration HARHISOK also came to Salt Lake and was received with open arms by all the people the school children by the thousand being gathered and singing his welcome in patriotic hymns GRANT said the people who did these things could not be altogether bad HARRISON went upon the platform and told the people in effect that in his opinion they were Dishonest and hypocritical hy-pocritical and that he did not propose to trust them until tima had demonstrated that they were sincere And now months afterward no hint or suggestion being given of insincerity the President deliberately repeats his insult and invites Congress and the nation to join with him in treating the people of Utah as a community of hypro crites members of a great conspiracy and unworthy of the trust and confidence of their fellow citizens There certainly is a striking contrast between be-tween General GRANT and President HARRISON HAR-RISON GRANT was a great man THE HERALD recites as above for the purpose of cheering the handful of Republicans living in this neck ot tLo woods Their lot is an unhappy one at best and the humanity which is in all prompt to the tender of sympathy sym-pathy and consolation All Republicans are not built after the pattern of B H |
