her married friends at progressive highfive last evening in a most delightful manner Mrs Sherman as a hostess is a perfect success possessing the happy faculty of gathering about her congenial coteries which gift with her vivacious manners make her entertainments much appreciated appre-ciated The pretty and harmonious furnishings fur-nishings of her admirably arranged house were in keeping with the excellence of the entertainment Mrs Sherman wore an elegant dress of black satin court train decollette and gold passementerie nn h trimmings receiving her uvaI u uc uu UUJVIUK uuw I The prizes choben were exquisitely dainty the first ladies prize bein a silver pin with most delicate tray wih delcate tracery upon and in It vines and flowers The boooy a pink plush batshapa match sufe the crown being the receptacle and brim lined with sandpaper Gentlemans first prize a handsome silver ver curd case containing deck boooy pap pa-p r knife in oxidized silver A very ong inal and pretty idea was conceived in tue distribution of tally cards The gentle mens cases were designated by states und ladies holding the cards with the proper capital for each were partners for the first game Large rings were given each couple to attach the counters the gentlemen using large bells and the ladies smaller ones tied with various colors of babyriboon These mementoes proved charming souvenirs of the occasion and the merry jingle of the bells as the participants progressed was very catchy 1 Snowy linen lunch clothes were spread upon tho small tables when the game was finished and 0 most most select card party in honor of Mr ana Mrs Witcher at the McCornlck mansion last nIght The guests played progressive j I high five until a late hour and numbere about twentyeight people The brightly j I illuminated parlors were filled with charm vo v U u u tleinen in evening dress It was a moat recherche affair Miss McCornick was a lovely and gracious hostess and wore the henors proudly Temple of Honor Last night being the fourteenth anniversary anniver-sary of the opening in this city of the Temple of Honor and Temperance No1 a grand concert and supper was given by the members to their friends The hal was beautifully decorated and wus tilled to its utmost capacity by a brilliant assembly assem-bly of ladies und gentlemen The programme was a varied and very excellent one It opened with a piece beautifully rendered by tho Spanish Mandolin Man-dolin and Guitar club followed by an address ad-dress by the chairman Mr H D Folsom on The Rise and Proirruss of the Orden il the United States Messrs Clark Held Simmons and Brewer as a quartette gave a very fine selection An original and meritorious poem on the order by Scott Anderson was very well received An organ solo by Mr Cuumller followed Messrs Held and Clark gave a cornet and trombone solo entitled Robin Adair which was loudly applauded The greatest hit of the evening was Mr J E Evans humorous reading which fairly brought down tho house Mrs Sherwoods soprano solo was well executed and elicited un encore Supper was served in fine style by the Womans Christian Temperance Union after which the programme was proceeded with withMr A F Clark gave a very interesting nccoLnt of the progress of Salt Lake tern pie from its formation fourteen j ears aco to the present time The order bud many vicissitudes in its early times but now the lodge was in a most flourishing condition financially and otherwise Even in it early and struggling days it hud always i honorably puiu the full benefits to which its members were entitled Often they had to go down into their pockets rather deeply to do bo Now however thoy are I strong and well able to meat ull culls on j the exchequer The lodge was adding to its membership and doing a good work in this city > Mr Held gave a concert solo which was exceedingly fine and was applauded to the echo and a very pleasant entertainment was brought to a close by the Mandolin L and Guitar club rendering another of their excellent selections The Temple of Honor intend giving entertainments en-tertainments once 0 month during the winter season which will bo looked forward for-ward to with interest 1 0 0 F Social Cub The Odd Fellows social and literary club gave one of its regular fortnightly dances at the G A R hall on Second South las I evening The attendance was good over sixty couples being present and dancing was kept up until midnight These affairs are purely Informal and refreshments wore entirely omitted The next entertainment will be of a literary lit-erary character alternating with the social The committee in charge for the season consist F M Shultz W M Elliott and E J Walker and these gentlemen are untiring < un-tiring in their efforts to render the gather inns of the club successful Music was furnished by Cliffs band Tho Boys The boys had a really good time at their fortnightly party last evening The attendance was not so large as usual but everyone seemed to be enjoying it Letter Carriers Tho carriers ball la anticipated with J much eagerness as an ultimately successful success-ful affair is assured by the management and such their former efforts have always been |
