Show TIlE GREAT WEST IN POLITICS There are evidences that the great west is going to assert itself in the councils of the nation It is going to set aside the eastern domination it has already too long submitted to and claim its rights in ho Union It will take a long and stubborn stub-born struggle to do this for a favored and pampered class never yields its prerogative preroga-tive and privileges without making a desperate effort to retain them but the pitilessness with which so many western recreants in the last Congress have been set aside in the elections since shows that the people are in earnest and they wIll exhibit no tolerance to any one who stands in their way And this revolution is going on day by day The influence of the reckless and selfish politicians of the northeast is being repudiated re-pudiated and all sectional measures such as high protective tariffs demonetization or silver subsidies for building ships land grants to railroads treasury favors to banks etc aro to be undone as far as possible pos-sible When this task is accomplished we lall see the Union under a benign and equitable national policy with the west directing and putting its impress upon the countrys legislation At tho present time wo have the spec tacle of tho President of the nation in antagonism tagonism to the vital measures necessary to the prosperity of all that section of our country lying west of the Allegheny mountains I ains He is a western man himself and at i this moment is seeking from his party an endorsement of his past course with a pledge of support for another term in the executive office But what do western RepUblicans Re-pUblicans say to this How do they relish the idea of being whipped wheedled and cajoled into upholding Mr HAHUISON in his I defiance of the popular will Do they con icier as the President appears to do that the people have no rights which their representatives esentatives are bound to respect Or do they recognize that when the people have plainly and clearly spoken there is nothing for a representative but to obey It is probable the northeastern leaders the protectionists the gold barons the raIlroad kings the trust companies etc vill attempt again at Minneapolis to exercise their authority over the Republican party and dictate its can idates and policy The Demo ratic attitude is one of expectation Their time is not yet come The Republicans re still in control of the executive department depart-ment nna of the Senate If they wish to repeat the blunders of the last session and n invite another defeat at the polls let them doso If western Republicans have not had enough of the pppular wrath let them court another visitation of it in their proceedings pro-ceedings at the national convention in Minneapolis Min-neapolis next time With the people behind be-hind them the Democratic party can afford ford to laugh at the misconduct of their opponents op-ponents and wait patiently till their time shall come |
