Show OGDENe t SATURDAY January 16 MURDERER SCHMIDT A Fiend In JailAnother Water Main Breaks A New Manufacture Officer R K Thompson and Sheriff F McKenzie of San Francisco were in the city yesterday on their way west with Charles Scmidt one of tho most cold blooded murderers that ever breathed On February 9 Schmidt and a colleague entered the home of Captain Greenwood about four miles from Napa California and administered poison to the captain and his wife They then ransacked the house and escaped with what valuables they could find Early in the morning after the poisoning fearing they had not done their work well and to cover up suspicion they returned to the house and shot both Mr and Mrs Greenwood The latter died but the captain after weeks of struggling recovered A reward of 4500 was offered for the capture of the perpetrators of the deed but nothing was heard of them until Schmidt wont on a protracted drunk in Denver and confessed lie was implicated in the awful crime He was arrested thereby there-by Detective Eustick When he sobered up ho denied any knowledge of the occurrence occur-rence but a few days ago when the California officers appeared on the scene he signed a written confession Schmidt wns seen by a HEBALD representa ti eat the city jail yesterday but he refused re-fused to use his organs of speech to any great extent He claims that the night after the murder he and his pal slept beneath be-neath some small trees a few miles from the Greenwood house In the morning I they separated and ho has no knowledge of the whereabouts of the other The prisoner is a German perhaps twen tyfive years ot age stoutly built He has only been in America a few years the greater portion of which he has been working work-ing in mines in California The officers left for San Francisco at 1 oclock yesterday afternoon with their man Detective Eustick will receive tile reward A AVatermain Breaks Another break in a watormaiu occurred at the corner of Wall avenue and Twenty seventh street esterday forenoon Before it could be stopped the streets In that vicinity were well inundated The water supply at the Union depot was turned off during the afternoon pending
