Show DESERET CHARIVARI The Affront to Bishop Moody Illustrated In aNew a-New Light To the Editor of THE HERALD AU controversies of a personal nature should be earnestly deprecated and especially es-pecially so when such articles occupy valuable valu-able space in a widely read newspaper but oJ o 9 1 2 I when so influential a journal as THE HERALD HER-ALD is made the medium for the atm a-tm of gall occasioned by wounded pride and disappointed ambition of one who borrows bor-rows the name of another to shield himself from the merited censure which would follow fol-low the discarding of his mask and says over the name of a second party that I which he would hesitate to father it becomes be-comes needful in order to shield the innocent inno-cent to offer a few words in reply and in a spirit of fairness THE HERALD is respectfully re-spectfully asked to yield sufficient space to a mild criticism of an article that appeared in THE DAILY HERALD of the 12th instant I entitled S i 4 DESERET CHARIVARI and signed Dennis Black In justice to Dennis who has ever received re-ceived the respect of those that know him he may consider himself dismissed and relieved re-lieved from any censure in the matter alike on account of his youth and the fact that he did not write the article in question ques-tion nor dictate more than the manly disclaimer dis-claimer that he does not want his name mentioned in connection with the disgraceful dis-graceful scene called a Charivari which took place in front of the residence of Bishop Milton Moody on the night of the 22d ultimo Bad the letter closed with the denial Deseretans would have applauded but under the disguise of a disclaimer a wrong has been perpetrated not only to the bishop but the good name of Deseret is involved The author of the letter after taking so much pains to prove an alibi for Dennis thereby admitting that it were better to be off on a wild goose chase than beating a tin pan in front of the bishops residence proceeds with habitual inconsistency to palliate the charivari disturbance by asserting that upon information 1 it was very mild affairan innocent frolicdesigned to be more an act of courtesy than a premeditated premedit-ated insult for in referring to the arrest of five participators he accuses Bishop Moody of perpetrating a low piece of spite work If the affair was so inno h is it n l in the cent why s necessary to lug t e wild goose chase in order to show that Dennis would have been ashamed to have I his name published as a participator The real author aims an nnder thrust at the bishop by saying The facts in the matter mat-ter as I am informed are these Bishop Moody used to be a boy until lie teas raised Ito I-to the dignity of a man by his ordination I the italics are mine If an ordination I can effect such a profound metamorphosis the proper authorities should lose time in I applying the remedy to the discoverer of I such a remarkable cure even though it be necessary to reordain him I Now the truth is although Bishop Moody is rather young for the unthankful position to which he has been called the I author of that letter knowsnot by information infor-mation that he was a manand an honest hon-est one toobefore his ordination to the bishoprIc and that no ordination can make I him more a man nor add one whit to the respect in which he is held by those that admire sand and detest duplicity and have no old scores to pay off nor axes to grind in his reduction to the ranks If the concluding paragraph of the authors au-thors letter wherein he says We have got out a new patent on charivraries is in imitation of the editorial style and refers to himsi If only no one here will be surprised sur-prised nor contest his right to the sole honor of the discovery and use of his patent nor to the suggestive taste which describes in such gleeful and sympathetic language the disgusting picture of the bellowing bovines wherein they are mention as being good imitators in the chiravari epidemic As the years roll on and the boys that were arrested for breaking the peace grow to thoughtful manhood they will realize that their best friends have been those that now insist thut they respect tile laws and rules of civilized society and not those who have so recently though naturally natur-ally became the champions of hoodlumism With kindly feelings toward those misguided mis-guided boys am respectfully JGUST DEs RET January 14 1S92 |
