| Show The Natural Gas Well Colonel Lett invited TUE HEUALD reporter re-porter to accompany him to see the gas welL The colonel is one of those affable gentlemen with whom any man would go a gas country feeling that it was perfectly safe There has been more tall lying about gas wells than all other things combined In fact all newspaper notices of tne size and immensity of gas wells are evaded by men who do not care to contaminate their morals THE HERALDS real estate man cannot lie and will tell the truth The temptation to make the feeblest flicker of elixir a mighty gushing monster rushIng rush-Ing roaring hades emitting millions on millions of infinitesimal coal banks tearing the earth for miles around and that can be distinctly heard at Denver is great But THE HERALD man cannot be tempted He sits entrenched on the pedestal of truth and fourteen volcanoes let loose at one and the same time would not cause him to deviate devi-ate one half bushel from the actual output What the people want is facts and here they are J Johnson in his time struck a minister of the gospel and a gas well His wife yielded him the one and dame earth the I other Th two came together yesterday or t be accurately truthful the one came to the other Rev Johnson coming from Denver and the gasses holding its own In the immediate presence of the heavenly agent and the flaming tongue of hades even a reporter will be pardoned for telling the truth Rev Johnson had read about the discovery of g in Salt Lake The account ac-count in the Denver paper cited that it leaped with such terrific force that boulders bould-ers weighing a ton were precipitated so high in the air and in their descent they crashed through buildings and were bur ried themselves so deep in the earth that no clue could be found of them cue The cause for this lamentable expansioa of truth was this J Johnsonin driving a well on his lot on Rio Grande avenuebetweenSixthand Seventh Sev-enth West and Fourthand Fifth South struck a very slight flow of gas at 75 feet and at 0 feet a little more gas while at 190 feet he secured a flame large enough t heat and light two dwellings The gas comes in a flow of water and is separated by allowing the water to flow in a barrel an outlet for the water being made below the surface while an outlet for the gas is made above the surface surace The find amounts t very little for commercial com-mercial purposes except as an indication that gas may be found in larger bodies at a greater depth Gas wells in all gas fields are considered failures when found with water and unless the water can be kept 1 I out by casing placing a tube outside the pip e conveying the gas they are abandoned aban-doned Mr Johnson will open correspondence with drillers with a view to putting down a well from one t two thousand feet |
