Show DRAMATIC AND LYRIC The Big Feature of the Reilly Wood Show BURNT CORK FOR SWEET CHARITY The Yaiclis Sisters DiveLast Nights Performance Per-formance The Full Cast of Jlarltann Notes Lovers of the variety are to have something some-thing unique at the Grand next Saturday and Monday nights The Hcill Wood show has the usual number of vaudeville features but the crowning feature fea-ture of the whole is the Vaidis sisters whowereoriinally brought to this country for the Black Crook revival 1 t 1 1Sl These latter employ a wonderful revolving revolv-ing arrangement made of silver called a trapeze on which they perform and execute exe-cute several darin feats which are likely to cause the spectators to shiver with a delightful sort of dread They are gracefuL grace-ful pretty and as selfpossessed in their sock as ifit was nothing more than run iug a sewing machine 7lll t 3 l But the point of the whole performances I < performance-s Lizzie Vaidis leap or rather dive from t he dome of the theatre A person who aw the dive in a New York theatre de describes it as follows I am not so interested in that as I am to know if Miss Lizzie is afraid I chanced to be high up at one side of the house the other night when they were waiting to enter They were standing hand in hand in the wings and as the music quickened up the two girls kissed one another quietly before coming on I dont know why I took more interest in them afterward but I did The younger faceso serious and at moments almost ctL was especially attractive attract-ive to me I realized That possibly they thought as I did that in spite of practice skill and nerve they do take their lives into their hands every time they go up that rope Bv the way there is nothing more graceful in the whole show than the descent of the rope from that fandango trapeze of theirs though of course the dive is the thing I wonder if her heart swells up in her throat as she slowly bends forward to get a steady turn as do so many of the hearts that watch her do it This is the most powerful dramatic spectacle today lu relation to its stage passion it is as a fcladiato 1 combat in Rome to a tragedy of vEscnylus The awe and spell of the reality of the thing the womans life fluttering through the void to go out perhaps per-haps it seems almost certainly on the crimson mattress in the net the hush and suspense as sie poises for the lejp the upturned faces white and strained the nervous assistants on the stage the sister in the wings looking up with glint composure compo-sure are painfully affecting aud the woman herself leaning rarelesslj against 11II he cornice in the blaze of ho reflector You wonder what ner solutions arc She goes up blithely with her hand in a metal ring and her body swinging lightly You study her face with glass though the distance makes even that unsatisfactory but what you see is only ptKect impassiveness impassive-ness a little restlessness perhaps in tlii eyes and a deepening of the thin lines about the mouth but no sign of fear indecision inde-cision almost of calculation And yet she moves carefully saving herself without an unnecessary muscular quiver At exactly the right second she must turn so as to jail on her back and dish ib ate the force of the fall over the greatest possible surface While you are going over these calculations in your mind she leaps A bright body falls h iivily on the mattress mat-tress is thrown upwai ds ten feet t ins a somersault as it descants a nun and the caper is safe and bows and tin house cheers madly a It was a clever thought whoever conceived con-ceived itof inaugurating an amateur minstrel j min-strel show of society bloods for the benefit of the Young Ladies Aid society In the name of sweet charity a thousand things could be done that under any other guise t v would never bo tolerated the first was the street parade at the head of a bandall the troupe attired In and light overcoats and plug hats a all a very Havcrly MastodoUlc presenting appearance This Jammed the galleries to the roof and the young ladies had taken j t care that the lower part of the house should present no bare spots There was hardly an inch of space to spare when the curtain ascended and the immense audiencs which might have been composed of the sisters sweethearts cousins and aunts of the company to judge by the friendliness it displayed gave a round of applause as the bevy of blacks on their pyramid of plush the end men and middle men in their accustomed places and the base drum surmounting the whole burston the vision It was 10 oclock when the first part alone I closed so the finish came too late to allow of any extended or critical disquisition on the whole Suffice it to say that the boys of the regular minstrel troupe who for a number of years have been storming outlying out-lying wards and settlements the Mal teseHainmcrDunbar crew were well baiha eretor t amcI received but that the torrent broke loose completely when the black but familiar visages of Pavey White and Downey opened the second edition There was any amount of funny things local gags yarns topical songs etc everyone of which the audience wildly l encored even though some of them shed a gentle melancholy rather than incited in-cited to boisterous merriment Dug White was the Bob Slavin of the evening and a prime favorite At some of M Downeys efforts there was scarcely a dry eye in the house The local tom cat story about Governors gone west you must let Thomas in and the advent of the man from Logan by wire were immensely received The instrumental instru-mental unblacked music under Pedersen Peder-sen was good and Gorliuskis song and the Easton Whitney Spencer and Goddard quartettealso unbleached were encored This was the fate of nearly everything every-thing on the programme The young ladies must have netted a comfortable sum that will greatly aid their very deserving society and we congratulate them and all others concerned on the successful issue w tr The long talked of and exhaustively advertised ad-vertised Montana comes off Thursday Friday and Saturday afternoon of this week Following is the full cast Charle II Icing of
