Show To Take Indian Lands WASHINGTON May llSecretar Noble was shown a dispatch from Pierre Dak in which it was said that many settlers had entered the Sioux reservation and staked out claims in anticipation of the favorable result of the pending negotiations with the Indians for the cession of a large part of their territory and that permission to enter tne reservation had been granted i by the officials of the interior department Washington provided it was donepeace ably When asked i permission had been given as stated the secretary said no such authority had been given and if the settlers had entered the reservation they would begotten be-gotten out immediately The public survey of the boundary lines of the reservation he said had been suspended sus-pended temporarily pending the negotiation negotia-tion for fear of creating alarm and distrust among the Indians He expresses the hope that the report that settlers were entering the Indian lands would prove to be unfounded un-founded as it might seriously embarrass the commissioners in their negotiations but i found to be true the action of the department would be prompt and effective |
