Show JUDGE CARLTONTHE TRIBUNE To the Editor of THE HERATD There are times when I find iu the editorial edi-torial columns of your morning contemporary contempo-rary much to admire because on certain subjects the person who wields the editorial edi-torial pen thinks correctly and expresses his thoughts with force and brilliancy There are other times when I am inclined to believe that the tripod is occupied by another and far different person I have I no reason to expect that any editorial writer for the Tribune will at any time speak in laudatory terms of any Democrat who does not obey its instructions or its wishes on subjects connected with Utah affairs nor do I have such hope or expectation expecta-tion tionAs n fair and just political opponent however I have a right to expect the Tri fcuiicas well as other newspapers to treat its opponents in a fair just and decent manner In the case of Judge Carlton the retiring member of the socalled Utah I commission sm your cotcmpovary been thus fair anti just Declamation is not proof The Tribune Tri-bune declares that The Republicans have made no move against Judge Ciirltcn On the contrary 1 feel quite sure that the course of the Tribune for at least two or three years has been one continuous move against Judge Carlton and if that paper could have accomplished his removal it would have been effected long since Judge Carlton as a Democrat as well as many other Democrats in Utah and elsewhere else-where expected to be asked to resign in order that the vacancy might be filled by a Re publican He doc not complain nor do his Democratic Demo-cratic friends complain because he and thv believe in the doctrine that every administration ad-ministration is entitled to surround itself by political friends However it is not my purpose to expound a political dogma but rather to protest againgt the rude and indiscreet manner in which the Tribune treats a respectablehon orable rctirint public servant who has for years discharged his duties t the entire satisfaction of a Republican and of a Democratic Demo-cratic administration I Judge Carlton is such a person as the Tribune would have its readers believewhy did a Republican President retain him in office for several years and why if an unfaithful un-faithful public officer did a Democratic President keep him in his position for four years That he was retained in oflice so long is evidence enough to prove that his conduct has been such as to meet the approbation of both the political parties Judge Carlton having taken an oath to discharge faithfully his duties as an officer of the United States has so discharged them and on retiring leaves Utah with the respect of many Republicans and Democrats Demo-crats and the late bitter tirades against t him fall flat before the real loyal people V of the territory When I use the term loyalty I do not use it in the same sense as the writer in the Tribune Evidently he considers no man loyal who does not think and act in accord with the Tribune DEMOCRAT |
