Show AMEND THE LAW If it be true as reported that President Presi-dent Cleveland has rescinded the order for the return of the battle flags captured cap-tured during the war of theRebellion and that he has done this for the reason that the law did not warrant the issuance issu-ance or enforcement of the order the law should at once be remedied The generous men of the north do not desire to boast over the brave but misguided men of the south The Union soldiers do not care to be forever flaunting it in the faces of the Confederates that the latter were whipped and to be taunting them with the evidences of their defeat If the war had been with a foreign foe and these battle flags had been captured from the enemv the case would be dif ferent but the strife was between brethren and the trophies are evidences of victories over members of a family by other members of the same family It is not generous it is not kind it is not brave and patriotic pat-riotic it is unworthy true soldiers to desire to hold on to their trophies of a sorrowful contest If the law will not permit the return of the captured flags let the statute be changed and then let the nation and the brave men whose heroic deeds are recorded more enduringly than in tattered tat-tered banners surrender the flags and thus erace another evidence of a struggle strug-gle which all regret President Cleve lands impulses were right and proper and they should be carried out according accord-ing to law as a matter of course |
