Show IN SECRET SOCIETIES Grand Master of Masons James William Hooper INDOMITABLE PERSEVERANCE The Story of an Honorable CareerNews of General Interest of the Other Fraternal OrdersNotes Perhaps nothing could better illustrate the character of Grand Master James William Hopper than a mention of his sturdy struggle for an education while he was a boy Ho attended the country schools of Kentucky Ho was naturally fond of reading and eagerly eager-ly stowed away any information ho might be able to obtain Books were not at all plentiful plenti-ful around young Hoppers homo Among thoao which ho could obtain however were some heavy theological treatises TTioy were full of Greek words and phrases Young Hopper therefore decided de-cided to learn Greek With the aid of a second hand grammar which he picked up somewhere and with no outside help he per sovurcd until when ho was 16 years old he was able to enter tho Millersburg Ky Col iugiato institution There he took up Latin and in a month thanks to his previous self unporwd training went through tho grammar It has been so all through his life No obstacle has been too high for him to surmount sur-mount if on tho other side lay duty No road has been too rough for him to travel if at its end was success So was born in Nicholas county Ky Nov 2S 1839 His father died when he was but 6 months old His grand parents camo from Culpeper county Va in 1815 and settled in Bourbon county Tho family fam-ily is an old and distinguished one His first work a was school teaching teach-ing and as after 1 ho finished his collegiate j r legiate course ho was fluent speaker of French German Spanish and Italian Ital-ian and an accomplished accom-plished Greek and Latin scholar a swell t well as being well j 6 n pin l tho other branches he must = e ado I a 1 JAMES WILLIAM IIOPPER bo began tho study of tho law In 1603 ho was licensed to practice In 18CS he became associate editor of Tho Lebanon Clarion and in 1670 ho founded Tho Lebanon Times which afterwards becamo Tho Standard Stand-ard and Times having absorbed The Lebanon Standard lie has continued ever since as editor and manager of The Standard and Timos In 1873 bo was known as tho Poet ef tho Kentucky Press and in 1S74 was made orator of the Press association of which ho was made president in 18S7 Bro Hopper was made a Mason in Vesper lodge No 71 at Elkton Ky in 1804 He joined Abraham lodge No8 on moving to Louisville and afterward transferred his membership to Lebanon lodge No 87 After serving in various positions ho was elected master in 1871 und reelected at several an anal meetings In 1873 ho attended Grand lodge for the first time Ho has served on different committees since that time and was elected grand junior warden and regularly regu-larly promoted until 1836 when ho was elected grand master Ho was exalted in Edmonds Royal Arch chapter No 83 and admitted in Lebanon council No CO in 1870 serving as high priest and thrico illustrious master In thc grand council ho was elected grand conductor of work in 1833 and reached the grand masters chair by regular promotion In 1877 ho delivered de-livered a Masonic address at Lebanon which was copied into several papers to Notes Them wero 211 deaths in tho Order of the State of California in 1SSS against 207 in J8S7 HSiero are G31 lodges in Illinois Thc total membership of the A 0 U Won W-on Oct I as reported by tho supremo recorder re-corder was 211510 Tho total disbursements disburse-ments for beneficiary claims were 31985750 Tbo Grand Lodge of Indiana assumed a saparato jurisdiction on tho 1st of December with a reported membership of 2430 This jurisdiction expects to add 2000 members during tho next year A fact in relation to tho death of Washington Washing-ton not generally known is thus stated in The Washington Star The day after his death tho clock in tho Masonic lodge in Alexandria Alex-andria of which he was a member was set at thc hour and minute of his demise Then the clock was stopped and it has never been permitted to run nor havo tho hands boon moved since The Art association of the Masonic temple Philadelphia has given proof of the wisdom tliat created it says Tho Pacific States It recently presented a life size portrait of Past Grand Master Bro John Thompson to the temple committee who received it on behalf of tho grand Masonic lodge of Pennsylvania and awarded it a choice position in the Ionic hall of thc Masonic temple This association now has about BOO members and is engaged in decorating the Egyptian hall of thc temple Wo would like to see the example of our Quaker City brothers become contagious as it would educate a taste too much neglected |
