Interests Inter-ests of the UhitedStates WASHINGTON March 27 Patrick Egan the nominee for minister to Chili has for many years been well known a a leader of the Irish people He was born in Balla mohan county Logford Ireland in 1841 When quite young he went into the grain business KNEW THE MASSES His business relations brought him into contact with the great masses and he very early displayed a deep interest in the Irish cause Becoming an active member of the advanced national party he took a part in the revolutionary movement which culminated culmin-ated in the attempted insurrection in ISO He was one of the organizers and members mem-bers of the council of the Home Rule league lea-gue formed in lSi1 WORKED WITH DAVITT When Davitt in 1S79 started his land league movement Egan together with JosephBiggar William OSullivanmem bers of parliament became trustees of the league and the work of the league in propo gating its principles and aiding the evicted tenants in 1830 led t the prosecution of Parnell Dillon Sexton Egan and others The prosecution failing to secure convic tion the English government suspended operations of the habeas corpus act and also devised a scheme to seize the funds of the league leageAIXG ACTING FOP TIE LEAGUE At the urgent request of the leaders of the movement Egan went to France in order to protect the money entrusted to his care and also to act as intermediary between be-tween the branches of the league in America Amer-ica and Australia and the national leaguers in Ireland and England He returned to his native country but fearful of the oppression and unfair treatment treat-ment on the part of the government of Great Britain he came in 1SS3 to America and went to live in Nebraska where he has since resided He had been engaged in the grain trade while in this country and has also taken active part in politics as a member mem-ber of the Republican party Mr Egan is still a live worker in the Irish cause and has confidence in leaders in the old country JOHN flICKS John Hicks who will cro to Peru as minister min-ister of the United States is a native born American fortytwo years of age He comes from Oshkosh the home of Senator Sawyer and is the proprietor and editor of the Oshkosh Xarthneatcrn He has several times been elected president presi-dent of the Wisconsin state press association associa-tion office but has never before held a public LITTLE TODD LINCOLN Robert Todd Lincoln who today was nominated minister to England is forty three years of arc and is the son of Abra hamLincoln He graduated from Harvard college served through Grants Virginia campaign a captain practiced law in Chicago Chi-cago and became secretary of war under President Garfield remaining in that post PresidentArthur Since his retirement in 1S35 he has been practicing law in Chicago THE MINISTEU TO KC 5IA Allen Thorndyke Rice nominated minister minis-ter to Russia was born I Massachusetts He is a graduate of Oxford university England and since 1870 has been editor and proprietor of the North American Review He also holds the controlling interest in the prominent partisan newspaper ZeJotin and has contributed largely to literature while taking a active part in politics GEORGE EAILET LORING George Bailey Loring of Massachusetts is best known because of his connection connecton with the department of agriculture of which he was commissioner from IbSl to bS bSHe He Is seventy two years of age and is a Harvard graduate boring has been long in public life beginning as sergeantat arms in the marine hospital at Chelsea in 1843 and at other times being postmaster centennial commissioner and Congressman MtTRAT nALBTBAD Hurat Halstead nominated for United States minister t Germany was born in 1829 at Ross Butler county Ohio and spent his minority on a farm At eighteen he hogan ho-gan writing for th newspapers at first contributing to tho lighter class of romances roman-ces In 1831 he finished schooling at a farmers college near Cincinnati and then did local newspaper reporting for several Cincinnati papers In 1S33 he became manager of a department on the Commercial Commer-cial and the following year ho acquired a small interest in that paper When the Commercial consolidated with the Gazette the Cincinnati Commercial Gazette immediately imme-diately became recognized a the organ of the Republicans Mr Halstead has a line presence genial manner and immense energy THOMAS RYAN Thomas Ryan of Kansas who has been named as minister to Mexico is a native of New York where he was born in ISOy He served during the war as a volunteer He was severely wounded and emerged as a captain in 1861 Since that time he has held various legal positions in Kansas and has been a representative in Congress James Churchill surveyor at St Louis entered the war as a private in Eighteenth Illinois infantry He rose to the rank of colonel He was severely wounded in an engagement and still carries several bullets in his body For many years past he has been United States commissioner and clerk of United States district court at St Louis |
