Show I PARDONED Joseph H Evans Set Free by the President OTHER PARDOIS SATUEDiY The Aggregate the Appropriation Bills Passed b the Late Cuii Cress Was 250000000 Presidential Pardons WASHINGTON March 5The President Pres-ident acted on a large number of pardon par-don cases yesterday Norman H Camp was convicted of embezzlement and sentenced in January 1886 to five years imprisonment at hard labor in the Territorial prison at Idaho to pay a fine of 1000 and stand committed until paid Ihe President granted a pardon in this case and endorsed the application applica-tion as follows In my opinion there have been grave doubts as to the guilt of this convict He has been imprisoned i under his sentence for more than a year and his character prior to the conviction and his surroundings are I think a sufficient guaranty in any event of his future pood conduct A pardon was also granted in the case of He Ying and He Lung who were convicted in the eastern district of Arkansas ot violating the internal revenue tax and sentenced to thirty days confinement and cay a fine of 100 The Presidents endorsement on their case was If any part of the sentence their case remains unexecuted unexe-cuted let the convicts be pardoned if not Jet the matter remain as it is The thirty days imprisonment expired long ago If they are still detained for the fine let that and all else remitted II The President also granted pardon in the case of J W Alder convicted of violating the postal laws and sentenced September 16th 18S6 to one years imp prispnment in the United States Penitentiary Peni-tentiary at McNeils Island Washington Washing-ton Territory He endorsed the application appli-cation Granted upon the ground that owing to the youth of the convict and the circumstances of the case I am satisfied thablhe ends of justice will be as well subserved by the punishment already suffered and the prospects of the boy as well secured by the imprisonment impris-onment of the months alreadr suffered as if he were longer connned iuhi3 place imprisonment Similar action was taken in the case of Joseph H Evans who was convicted of polygamy and unlawful cohabitation cohabita-tion and sentenced November 1st 1884 to five years and six months in the Utah Penitentiary and to pay a fine of 250 The President en Jorsed this application as follows Granted This convict is nearly 70 years old was convicted of polygamy and unlawful cohabitation He has been imprisoned more than two years and his pardon is prayed for by his legal wife Though he will not promise obey the law ibgaiast polygamy yet I am determined deter-mined that the hardship of his case shall not be cited to show that the government gov-ernment > is inclined to be vindictive in its attempt tb extirpate the practice of polygamy |
