Show The Fire in Evanston Ed Rush David James Cos plumber writes THE HERALD from Evanston under date of December 30th For some reason the letter has been delayed de-layed in reaching us EVANSTON December 30th 1886 To the Editor of THE HERALD A portion of Chinatown was consumed con-sumed by fire this evening at 8 oclock I am unable to state the amount of the loss A great deal of rowdyism was displayed causing the calling out of United States troops to protect the Chinese and their property Every thing is quiet at this writing 930 pm the fire is out the weather is mild I have been trying to have the citizens put in a system of water pipes and works they having no protection against fire which was shown by the conflagration this evening I think they will do something now or wait until they are homeless and thus profit by experience from the outlook they wont have to wait long 1 |
